Title: Members leaving
Post by: xXNovaxX on November 29, 2009, 07:54:07 pm
Hello

I just thought maybe when members leave or de activate their account there could be like a survey or something where they CAN if they want write or select from a drop down menu reasons for leaving.

This can in itself create suggestions to how to IMPROVE this site. Especially if it's sometihng "negative" and people who are ACTIVE, may be afraid to say.

Like I see DOZENS of sites where when i click "delete account" I have the ability to click an option to why I left e.g. " in Facebook it has "safety reasons...i get too many e-mails...privacy....i dont like it anymore". This way, a graph/tally can be created and we well, the Mods/ Admin can see which one is high and work on it, e.g. maybe people dont realise you can stop e-mails being sent to you (lol, bad example I know, people dont exactly leave VN because of this)

I just thought I'd suggest this because sometimes really useful people with hundreds/ or low thousands of post, just LEAVE like that, its like a chunk has been pulled out of me  :'(  e.g. Kurrymuncer, Khalil, DanielTennis (who has now returned), and several others who have posted a lot.

Lol, only kidding, but yeah  :)

I think the major reasons why people leave this site are fairly obvious. Either they leave only because they have finished VCE or they get really bad ENTERs and don't want any reminders of the failures.

^ Thats a good point you make, but i have only been on this site since early 2009, and results are not out yet, and ive seen an exodus of people relative to those "Active" members.

But your's would be a reason as well.

Its because they discover facebook and realise what they have been missing out on

I think it's a good idea

i think they leave because they get harrassed by emails and on msn with people asking them for stuff, just expecting them to help and being really rude about it

Don't worry, kurrymuncher is still hanging around here.  He's still the same guy we know but keeping a low profile.  :)

lol you're right, hence I don't give out my email ><

LOL, well at least it shows you're/they're smart if they are being chased ><

But thats why theres an option to hide ur email from the site....i have a feeling thoguh not everybody knows that.

Some drop down menu options could include;

therefore admin would know, thus more privacy can be made e.g. "hiding profiles" or "last posts"

Tougher stance on harassment

More advertisement/ pointing out that  Uni section exists e.g. maybe building it up

Maybe a TIMER could be placed on the site e.g "you have been on for 2 hours"

Have a "more info/comment section if a user selects this

Make it clearer you can stop e-mails being sent via profile settings

i.e. the site is too much socialization/talking/general discussion or these members are leechers =P

same as above

Please note, I personally do not experience these "issues", I was just pointing out what OTHERS may feel/ I started a list.

He could even be hanging in this thread right now...  ::)
I have a feeling its crappy, LOL. I think Kurrymuncher did I.T, and he has sorta the same attitude ;] not necessarily a BAD thing...lol

  • Not enough free (study) notes
i.e. the site is too much socialization/talking/general discussion or these members are leechers =P

That's been a major thing for this site.  Random people who just sign up with 0 posts and then PM'img to to re-upload things that you uploaded 10-12 months ago.

You guessed correctly :P!

Kurrymuncher is Crappy? Crappy has only recently come on VN and is making regular posts. Welcome back Kurrymuncher.

^ I agree. For some reaosn I get annoyed when people sign up, 0 posts, and dont sign in again.....it's like WTH. If you look at the "members" button we have 26 pages i think of like HUNDREDS/thousands of members, 95% of which don't use the site anymore/use it once/dont post.

LOL, i think its just I feel they are a waste of space on the server >< their name wastes unnecessary Kb

They might be long time readers, never time posters?
They always show up :P.
Well since the max number of people online has been 200 something....out of *insert infinite sign* members..... lol.

But I like it that way kinda, makes it a smaller/more personal community ><

That's 200+ members at one point of time. I think there are way more people coming on here if we look at 24 hours :P

Don't some people leave because they're banned for being abusive?

thats only like 0.01% of the population that >>>I<<< know of anyway, in my whole time I ave only heard of 2-4 people being banned, and they dont even count, since their posting is like <15

Hmm true. Maybe because people lose interest in VCE as they have seen more of life/studied to a higher level then.

This. Nova, this site will always have a high 'drop off' rate because of its target audience being VCE. I don't honestly think security, spamming etc. is a major reason people leave, it is that they see no benefit in staying as they have completed VCE.

You can suggest expanding university forums but realistically it's not going to do much, because of the small uni community on this site. If you take all the uni students here, very few would be doing the same degree with the same subjects at the same uni, so setting up a VCE-style question board wouldn't really work.

In my opinion, only a select few will stay as they progress through uni/tafe etc. and this will always be the case. Theres not a whole lot the site can do. It's aimed at VCE students, and they are going to make up the majority of users. My 2 cents.

Key tenet of customer management:

You cannot please everyone! So survey the ones you are retaining too :)

Yep. All of VN's 2006ers are here for their own unique reasons: I don't have a life, humph often stays up till 4am and needs something to do, Collin Li has career interests here and Excal is the resident I.T geek.

Well I mainly go on this website when I'm stuck/procrastinating from working on a maths problem. And 4am in the morning here is midday in Melbourne, so I figure there's nothing wrong with that :P

Yeah, I'm dissing my reason for being here, not yours :)
  My inner monologue goes:
"well humph is on here and he clearly has a life"
"well that's exactly the point. humph, as you say, seems to be doing well for himself. he's on VN merely for a lark, whereas *you* being on VN is a sad indictment of your lack of a life. Delete that account. Now."
"*sigh*, as they say, 'tears don't flow from a handkerchief.' If you weren't F5ing the VN board index, you'd be doing something else symptomatic of an existence devoid of meaning and enjoyment. So I wouldn't bother with the delete button."

Don't let society define what constitutes "having a life"

Maybe you just like it. (Another possibility is that it does feel mediocre, hence you feeling this way, and you have to get off your arse and find something productive to channel your time and efforts into)

Thank you, good response.
Was my post too plaintive and self-indulgent? If so, I won't make any more like it.
