Title: Uni Books
Post by: chops_07 on February 02, 2010, 05:49:30 pm
How do we find out what books are needed for our subjects?
And where can we purchase these books (Is it only at the Uni bookshop?)
Please provide any additional information that may be useful when purchasing books.

Thank-you. :)

You can look it up in your student portal, under Admin tab --> Booklists, though I'm not sure if the booklists have been released yet. Most (if not all) books that you need can be obtained at the uni bookshop, but you might find it cheaper at some other shops around the city, or maybe even second-hand.

Is the only place to buy books from the uni book store not including online?
Should we buy all books on the booklist?
Thanks.

Your lecturer will let you know which ones to get during your first lecture

http://www.textbookexchange.com.au is a website where you can buy second hand books from people, many of which are fellow UoM students. I've successfully met up with and purchased from two sellers on campus using the website, both times were a success.  :)

hey on the booklist i see some things like "Organic Chemistry Study Guide + Solutions"
whats this ? neccessary?

also, for a couple of my subjects, it shows up as "No results found" and "Either we have no record of a subject with that code or  this code is subordinate to another code (see below)."

You can look up the book titles from the subject handbook

It's pretty much worked solutions and explanations to the questions in the textbook. If you end up needing it, you could just go to the library and search for the book there. Actually I'd say for all the books they "reccommend" - test drive them first and then maybe buy it if you find you're using them excessively.

... Or you might meet a fellow first year who's bought it and you could possibly ask to borrow theirs.

Is it a good idea to get books right now, or to wait until you decide whether or not you actually like the subjects you're taking enough not to swap around before you purchase the books?  And what about readers, do you have to purchase those right now and in the bookstore as well?

I get slightly confused.

Wait until your first lecture or first few lectures.  If the lecturer stresses to do the questions from the book, then get the book.  Or if you're really unsure you could always ask your lecturer.

Alright :)  Thanks.  I'll wait a little while.

On the booklist there's some books that are 'strongly recommended' or 'recommended'.
Do we need to purchase these books or just the prescribed ones?

Thanks.

What is the maximum time you're allowed to borrow any one book at UoM?

Don't they have a limit on how many times you're allowed to renew?

4 times would be the maximum amount of times you can renew. Of course you could just borrow the same book with different barcode and start again from there :P

Depends on the book.
If no one wants it, renew as many times up to your heart's content :) :)
(if you borrow one of those 4 week loan books, renew 2 times and you have gotten yourself a textbook for one whole semester :) )

I think I'm going to like UoM library, up until of course I can't renew a book or worse, borrow one.

Grr I don't like this textbookexchange website. You need to give them every single detail about yourself. Is it a trustworthy website?

Quite trustworthy I reckon.

Put in fake details in if you are not comfortable with giving out certain information.

The lecture notes for Calculus 2 were there today when I checked.  When you walk through the security barriers, turn right and look towards the right.  They should be (if I'm not mistaken) a bound book with a green cover on a shelf.

Yup the back of the shelf is facing towards the foyer of store (where boxes of plastic bags were). So basically turn right immediately after entering barriers and look on right shelf.

I'm not sure about second year maths but that's what should happen with jaffies.  But it would be pretty dog of them not to provide you with lecture notes before the first lecture, even on the LMS.
