They've got me in coming in Tuesday for one tutorial :(

On closure examination, I only have to move all my tutorials, one of my lectures and one of my labs. Wasn't AS bad as I thought.

Have to change everything but two lectures (which I don't really have to move anyway) -_-

Err, so apparently doing 512-225 Biological Psychology and 512-227 Developmental Psychology gives me 512-229 Common Lab Class for 225 and 227, which means my total contact hours goes down by two hours (i.e., one two-hour prac rather than two two-hour pracs as Handbook suggested). This is good news, except it's currently locked in at 8am, with last class at 5pm that day >_>

Wow a day early.

I've got a full day on Wednesday (9-5 of mostly Chemistry :S ). All other days I start at 10.  Wednesdays and Thursdays I finish at 5.  The only problem is that I've got very large gaps in between some lectures/tutes.

I've got a reasonable timetable for a jaffy, right?

EDIT: Here's my timetable:

Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well, especially with Chem for most of the day.  But the only problem for me is that I also have to factor in part time work.  Since I'm on a traineeship, I have to work at minimum of 15 hours/week and that's where I'm stuck.

Also, how is it possible to have a Chem lecture and ELS at the same time?

EDIT:  Don't worry, answered my own question.

By midnight, i mean you can VIEW them. You can't edit them.

Go to your timetable on my.monash (it's on the home page)

Hit "weekly view", then click "next week"

If you do it after midnight tonight, "next week" will take you to your allocated timetable for sem 1, 2010 :)

What's the deal with moving lectures around? How do I know it's not the same lecture but just put down twice in the one week??

EDIT: what's this L01/01, L01/02 etc stuff on the list of times page?

2nd EDIT: Dw answered my own question. L01 I'm guessing is the 1st lecture and L02 is the 2nd...

I found this a massive waste of time. I'd be suprised if you kept going past like the 2nd/3rd week, so don't worry about fitting it into your timetable so much.

Yes.

But if we move out of a full class, we can still get back in, right?  It only says:

Quote
Overfull and Full labels on subjects are there to show you whether you can enter a class or not. You do not have to leave an overfull or full class (your place in that class is safe), but if you do decide to move out of an overfull class, you will not be able to get back in.

I heard in many cases, morning classes tend to have the most vacancies.  Is this true?

So if you're a morning person, would it be best to try and cram everything before 12 pm?  Has anyone tried this?
Title: Re: UoM Timetables 2010 OUT NOW!
Post by: natty on February 21, 2010, 10:49:21 pm
Mine's not too bad. I don't mind the 2 long days. And only Science 101 on Thursdays which I've heard is only important for the first couple of weeks? Hopefully I can change my Management tute to Monday (if it runs), otherwise I'll be coming in for an hour every 2nd week :(

But three 8am starts isn't too appealing!

Can anyone tell me from personal experience, is 3 (or even 4) hours of lectures and tutes in a row a lot? Or is it better to break them up like 2 and 1 (or 2 and 2)?

Post by: TrueLight on February 21, 2010, 11:42:44 pm
for me yes! its a lot ...i prefer to eat...although im stuck with 5 hrs in a row
Title: Re: UoM Timetables 2010 OUT NOW!
Post by: champorado on February 22, 2010, 12:08:32 am
I would say 3 is a max for me. First sem, I had 5 hours in a row (either 11-4, or 12-5 on a tuesday) and by the end of it, my brain was like mush. I have a very short attention span, so that just might be me.

also, it might depend if it's lectures or tutes. if it was 4 hours of lectures in a row, i'd probably fall asleep, since it's mostly a passive activity.

gloam:
If you move out of a full class, it goes to from full to, say, 93%. If somebody doesn't change into that class, then you can go back to that class. If you move from an overfull class, it goes from overfull to full and you can't get back in.

With the morning classes thing, I think the earliest classes and the latest classes have the lowest amount. There were over 100 macro streams last sem, and the ones that seemed the most empty were the 8am and 6pm ones. If you're a morning person, then that sounds good. I knew somebody who had to go into uni all five days (which is kinda funny for a comm student) and he timetabled everything as early as he could so he could have time to do stuff after all his classes finished.

Finally have my timetable!

Anyway

Monday: 10am (Real Analysis Lecture), 11am (Real Analysis Tutorial), 12pm (QM & SR lecture), 2pm (T & C physics lecture) & 4pm (QM & SR Tutorial).

Tuesday: 9am - 12pm (QM & SR lab), 2pm (Real Analysis with Applications Lab) & 4pm (T & C physics Tutorial).

Wednesday: 9am (Introductory Personal Finance Tutorial), 10am (T & C Lecture), 12pm (QM & SR Lecture), 2 - 4pm (Introductory Personal Finance Lecture) & 4pm (Real Analysis & Applications Lecture).

Thursday: 2pm - 5pm (T & C Physics Lab)

Friday: 9am (QM & SR Lecture), 12pm (Real Analysis Lecture) & 2pm (T & C Physics).

It's a good timetable but if I could put those 9am starts at 10am it would be better, also I want to find when Arun Ram lectures for real analysis (he sounds like a great lecturer).

Hmmm thought so. 3 hours would probably be the limit for me :|

Can anyone tell me what the chances are of changing my timetable around this way (the top one is what I got, and the bottom one is my edited one):

The one they gave me is horrible, and after MUCH MUCH MUCH tweaking and planning, I made this one. I'm yet to decide on which tutorials to put when but dm..

P.S. the brackets mean what number weekly lecture it is.

EDIT for shocking spelling and grammar mistakes..

EDIT (again..) just realised I'm jumping from stream to stream like there's no tomorrow! Grrrr better change that.

lectures on all five days? :/

most subs don't run classes on tues between 12 and 2. you can go to any lecture stream, even if it's not the one you're timetabled (not sure how it works with qm, though, since you hand in your assignments in lectures?). besides that tues afternoon tute you want, everything else looks good.

Yes, lectures on all five days! :( :( Calc 2 has them on Mon Wed and Fri, and Intro Mcr has them on both Tues and Thurs. Ridiculous... no possible way to get a day off!

Ok thanks for that, no wonder I couldn't find any on then lol. I've sorted out which tutes to go to as well (it worked out perfectly, as when one tute wasn't on, a tute for another sub was!). Except I can't find tute times for Finance 1: https://sis.unimelb.edu.au/cgi-bin/subjects.pl/list/23575 there's nothing here :S

Pretty sure QM assignments are marked by tutors, therefore they have to sort out the assignments anyway. I remember the lecturer telling us that we had an extra day if we came on the Wednesday lecture (as opposed to Tuesday).

I did last night. Doesn't it say somewhere at the top something along the lines of "if you change your subjects... whatever you agree to here no longer applies".

It says that my timetable clashes
it offers the reason;
'You may be doing a difficult combination of subjects, which produces a clash between subjects.
If you have subjects listed in the top "Subjects" box, then this is the most likely explanation.
Please click the Show my clashing timetable button to see your timetable.'

then when i click the buttn 'show my clashing timetable'
a 'terms of agreement' thing pops up that I have to check the disclaimer-

'I understand the warnings given above, and agree to accept a clashing timetable'

My question is, do I just accept this?

Ok cool, thanks :) So I'm guessing it doesn't matter if you have different lecturers for the same subject.

Where exactly do you go to edit your timetable btw? Your portal or the sis page?

Either. On your portal you're just accessing the SIS page anyway by going to 'view my timetable' through the admin tab. A little box just pops up down the bottom that says 'edit my timetable'.

They add extra streams. They weren't really expecting so many people for Japanese 1A last year and so they had to add another lecture stream plus about half a dozen more seminar streams? If they don't, it'll be that fruitless tute swapping crap again. -_- I really hope I can change my OB tute. It's standing in the way of my three day week.

i can't edit yet. :( so sad watching these percentages change.

The first two weeks are done in large groups, where you do stuff. Then you get broken into smaller groups and get allocated another room (at the same time) and do more stuff.

Why can't i choose to do two streams for Calc 2??? It's saying system clash

Alloc8 only lets you choose one stream for that subject. If you try move one lecture of a set to another stream, it moves ALL the lectures to that other stream. The system is trying to move your set of lectures, but it must be clashing with other things on your timetable, thus you get the clash message. If you really wanted to switch around when uni starts, you could just show up to that lecture, no one cares/knows, not sure if that's a good thing to do though (haven't done it myself for math subjects).

if i click on a subject and there arent any more new spots coming up for the subject, does that mean there arent any streams atm ?

There's probably only that one stream available.

I went to two. The first one was my very first commerce lecture. The guy sitting next to me slept on my arm for most of it. It was awesome.

I'm not sure why I went to the second one, but if it's that out of the way, I wouldn't bother going.

edit: forgot my timetable update. like i thought, it's just ob that's in the way. french classes are linked on both days, so cos i can't move my monday class, it won't let me have wednesdays off either. >:(

My breadth is choir at 4.30 to 6.30 on Tuesday, so that's not on there.

I was always better with long days though, we had some short days at school, I could never bring myself to concentrate enough for the time. So I guess that timetable suits me.

At least I get one hour breaks every day between 1pm and 2pm.

Every second Tuesdays?  Wait, we don't have pracs every week?

EDIT: Oh, it says here in the handbook:

Quote
6 x three hours of practical activities during semester

which means one prac every 2 weeks.  But where does this fit in:

Quote
6 hours of computer aided learning during semester, 8 hours of independent learning tasks during semester.

I wasn't expecting any days off, but I have Thursdays and every second Tuesday off cause of pracs. But busy Monday, Wednesday and Friday

The independent learning tasks, or ILTs are tasks you do at home. You read through a whole lot of information and there is a test at the end. If this is for biology the ILTs are only worth 5% (less than 1% each).

They opened up some OB tutes! Managed to quickly sneak into a 1pm one which are usually always full. Major win.

Helloooooooooo 3 day week nice to meet you.

When you click on edit, if you then click on an overfull tute, what happens? Every single tutorial says overfull.

I don't want to leave my current one and then be stuck with nothing.

It'll just say that it's full and you can't move into it.

I think they send them to everyone in commerce or something. Bc no one has access to who is in what tute/lecture after all..

I JUST WANT THE CHEM AND BIOMOLECULAR ENG STUDENTS TO ALL MOVE TO THE REACTOR ENG TUTES ON MONDAY ARVO BECAUSE THE PLAIN CHEM ENG STUDENTS NEED THE OTHER REACTOR ENG TUTE TIMESLOTS.

fml :(

Same happened to me (thermal clashed with quantum) so I'm just checking over my timetable to make sure it doesn't happen again. Also reactor eng sounds like it's nuclear reactor engineering which sounds hardcore.

Sorry for not coming today but I cracked it as the bookshop still hasn't got my lecture notes in. There is one Thursday?

Also the damn bookshop gives you store credit instead of cash for buybacks.

Looks nasty, but the pracs are one offs, and a couple of the other classes either dont run, or aren't compulsory.

What actually defines a good timetable? And say if I have a tutorial at 9amto11 in the arts building is there enough time granted at the end of the tutorial to get to a lecture at the spot at 12?

It all depends on personal preference. Some people like morning classes, some like afternoon. Having a day off usually constitutes to a good timetable.

As for your tute in the spot, i had that problem last year except i was walking from Redmond Barry (the biology building). If you walk fast you can usually get there just on time or a minute or two late because classes usually finish at 5 to the hour.

Would normally take ~10 minutes of fast walking from Redmond Barry to The Spot

Meh, I decided to change my breadth to something else today and now it's going to take ages.

Anyone know how long it takes on average?

I guess I'll just have to turn up to whatever I want and hope for the best.

No more witch hunting?

I think you can get it changed at the Portal. I fit doesn't need approval, then it would be done by midnight. If it does need approval, then it will take a few days weeks.

As far as I know, it may take around 5-10 working days if your subject requires an interview and you have handed your approval form in for them to approve you manually. However if your subject doesn't require you to sit an interview and you meet its prereqs it would probably be one day, or a maximum two days.

Um, if you are not sure about your subject pre-reqs, check subject handbooks. I m sure you can find it.

Should be fine. But might become an issue at some point because in some subjects they hold mid semester tests during tutes so you could have all 4 in one day.

Okay, thanks! I think I have mid-semester tests for 3 subjects. I might try to change one to Monday, I have a 2 hour break then.
