In the Uni section I think it'd be good if each uni had a sticky with info about the uni, pics of the campus, all that cool stuff. Might convince some of us to go there.
I spent half an hour reading up and looking at pics of UoM. It looks amazing. Better than Monash so far.. (prove me otherwise monash kids :P)
-
monash might not be as pretty, i admit, but we have a much much larger variety of courses and options
do you want to be at a slightly nicer campus for just 3 or 4 years, or spend the rest of your life knowing you are more qualified with a double degree?

Undergraduate degrees are serious business.
lol

Campus is a factor in uni selection. Especially when you dont particularly fancy any specific course. Its not as though you'd be getting a substandard degree at UoM anyway.

Monash is better than Melbourne because it has a proper IT faculty.
I can't think of anything else really. If only the buildings weren't so incredibly ugly.

its so true....
-
the looks of buildings on the outside doesn't really matter
thats what vacations are for

I went to UoM for a chemistry excursion and got a tour around monash's chemistry building and found that UoM's chemistry building's facilities were much nicer. I would probably say the same with physics, but I didn't get to see Monash's maths building.
-
Monash's physics building feels like home. I've spent so much time there...
That said, I don't think I'll be going to Monash.
-
*Shrugs* i think monash actually offers BETTER degrees for many courses. i've heard physics is better at melbourne, but i know definitively that monash offers the best chem department in the southern hemisphere.
i went to enrollment and o'week at monash and melbourne and monash was much more fun. seems like a much better vibe, more community feel and students got involved and heaps of free stuff.
that said i suppose melbourne has pretty buildings. and a fading reputation. and good locality.
-
that said, in reality if melbourne kept offering double degrees (and became more selective/exclusive/competitive again) i probably would have gone to melbourne. which would have been a shame, cos i think i will have more fun at monash than i would have had at melbourne.

Monash Engineering > Melbourne engineering
Monash has double degrees!!!!!!!!!!!

Monash gave me free booze.

I reckon, UoM commerce > Monash's commerce though.
But I could be biased, I dunno.

I've walked around the ANU campus a fair bit and it's really beautiful. There are large stretches of grass and open spaces to relax at. There is also quite a bit of wildlife, like ducks, parrots and other birds, and you can walk fairly close to them without them running away. Can't think of a better campus to live at.
The buildings don't look that flashy, but they're pretty decent - anyway is that really important? However they are constructing a massive new science facility which is gonna be awesome.
As for the quality of the degrees... well, it's only the national university of Australia.
(And there's plenty of free booze at the Hall parties)

...but you have to live in canberra. sorry, someone had to say it.

or board there..

Monash has double degrees and Melbourne is discontinuing their engineering. This year was their last year for new engineering student intake. Also "The Melbourne Model" wtf is up with that shit.

Monash has a fucking Synchrotron across the road!

\o/ lets hang out.
Wait what?

haha yeah fkn synchrotron ftw!!!

I've spent quite a bit of time in the Monash physics buildings (trust me...), but I don't think I'll end up going to Monash next year. Might though. :)

meh, everything happens at uni anyway, you barely need to go outside
uni makes up for it all
-
melbourne model is designed to make money. anyone looked at the price of a post-grad degree at melbourne? (which you would need, having got some quasi-useful undergrad degree under the melbourne model)
not that it's really about the money for the student, and once earning it'll seem insignificant, but heres for reference:
science/law at monash: 5 years x ~$6000 = $30 000
Science at melb + JD (law) at melb = 3 years x ~$3 500 + 3 years x $28 800 = $96 900
... assuming you get CSP (%50 of students)
sooo yeah three times as much profit for the uni, one extra year for the students.... inefficient AND expensive.
btw synchrotron ftw...

isn't that lucky :P, cos if you DID go outside... not a lot would be happening

PhB at ANU?

Is the free booze only beer? I hate the taste of beer

beer, UDL, depends who's giving it out

Does UoM even have an IT faculty?

Bachelor of Philosophy (Hons) - Science @ ANU
Semester 1 - Ordinary DEs and Advanced Vector Calculus \ Thermal Physics \ Quantum Mechanics \ Modern Chinese 3 \
Semester 2 - Partial DEs, Fourier Analysis and Complex Analysis \ Electromagnetism \ Waves and Optics \ ? \
Your physics course accelerates you guys by so much! I don't get to do complex analysis until next year.

This thread is going to end in some kind of horrible debate. I can feel it hmmmm

I wouldn't so much as call it a debate than petty name calling.
At the end of the day, both Monash and Melbourne are well recognised universities, sought after by employers and both virtually unknown to anyone outside Victoria, let alone the world.

Monash has international campuses, so it would be known outside of Victoria.
haha I couldn't resist
-
And apparently the international campuses have a pretty bad reputation...
I'd like to go to ANU, but if I stay in Victoria I'll probably end up doing the science scholars program at Monash.
-
science advanced with honours students (monash) get a common room and microwave!! jealous already... i can't do science advanced/law double degree... sigh....

I was at LaTrobe for a year. Achieved sweet FA there...*but* it is irrefutably the best uni in Victoria - if not Australia - if not the world, because......
1. The coffee (at the best cafe at LaTrobe) is better than at that UniMelb place on Swanston St.
2. So is the focaccia
3. There's a good deal if you buy both 1. and 2.
4. If you arrive after 5.pm, sometimes you can get one of 2. for free.
5. The espresso machine has stickers that are very funny. If you're a leftie. (Which I was, at that point in time.)
6. You can get a nice Nasi Lemak for $3.50
7. There's a moat, lots of trees and several green spaces. Sooo much more of an attraction than Umelb's pretty sandstone buildings. I mean, if you're gonna be old, be, like, at least 600 years old.
8. Preston Market is nearer than the Vic Market is from Melb or Monash.
9. Rabelais is better than Farrago or Lot's Wife. (So opined someone writing in Rabelais.)
10. However slack you are with your uni work, the interminable tram journey on the 86 Line leaves you feeling you can justify treating yourself when you get to Brunswick St.

Oh yeah. UoM has a toilet cubicle in the physics building and on the toilet paper dispenser it reads, "Arts degree here" with an arrow pointing down to the paper. And wait for it... It's ON CAMPUS. :P

UoM has a new microbiology and genetics building that was built for the sole purpose of one-upping Monash (it's on campus!)
-
Monash has the biggest electron microscope in the southern hemisphere ON CAMPUS. :P

<deprecating comment about Monash students obsession with size>
-
<deprecating comment about Monash students obsession with size>
Technically it's the smallest microscope in the southern hemisphere, so it just means we're the *most* secure in that respect ;)
But that's okay we don't expect you UoM'ers to do that kind of "thinkythink" as you call it and understand such complicated ideas :)
-
There is no room for "thinkythink" in the Melbourne Model! Why, last year we cut over 200 academic positions, predominantly from the Arts faculty! At our university, students take their generalist degree and they're damn well grateful for it!
-
SYNCHROTRON!!
-
SYNCHROTRON!!
But technically it's not ON CAMPUS. And you can't say that it's Monash's synchrotron. You can only say "the synchrotron at Monash".

I love this thread. Also I like the idea that the first post was about.
WRT Melbourne having nicer buildings, I can say that Deakin has even nicer buildings so why don't you melbourne people move there :P?

Depends which campus you're talking about. Burwood isn't too far away.
-
The word going around is that the children of high up people in Monash are sending their kids to Melbourne :O
-
You don't "send your kids" to university. By that age you should be deciding for yourself.
-

Yeah when offers come out in Jan, I figure I'll recruit some of the UoM people here to write a little introduction for the new 1st years.

I think they advertise that they're the Number 1 Uni for law.

There are so many rankings out there for Uni's.
I think ANU is regularly ranked higher than Melb Uni on most of them though...

fact is ACU isnt on there D: but yet i'm going tha
