Title: prac cut termite?
Post by: monokekie on March 07, 2010, 11:00:58 pm
is it true that you have to cut a termite's head off and squeeze its gut out just to see what's inside?

...well, I have to cut humans up instead. Who's worse off? =\ Cut open a chest and took someone's heart out and held it in my hands last week actually.

Not at all. Pretty much the entire course finds it interesting (unless we're all weirdos; still a possibility).

Never heard of anyone quitting because of it. I'm pretty sure you'd expect something like this when you choose to accept the offer.

ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwtf

I actually remember that prac very well :P

You had to examine the termite's gut flagellates. First, hold its body with forceps so it doesn't run away, then with a razor, slice off the head. Then roll it over and squish out the guts, then prepare the microscope slide. What fun :P

But I think this happens in semester 2, along with knocking out Drosophila with chloroform.

Funny how UoM is inundated with socialist activists but has very little (or even none) animal rights activists, eh?

I would not be able to do that.. Corpses and dead bodies just freak me out.

Very weird. I dont see how people can cut up bodies then head off for a lunch break using the same hands to eat. :O~~~

You don't think of the bodies as real people, just objects (that's how I don't puke ;D)

It does creep me out occasionally when I go eat. After my first dissection, I had brought pork ribs which looked eerily similar to flesh for lunch. Decided to pass on those for that day. But yeh, you kind of zone out while you're actually dissecting and as someone said, you more regard it as an object than a person. That is, until you look at their face again and get a reminder.

Im only used to treating live people as objects. :P
It must be weird thinking that they have a family somewhere and youre pulling them apart as a second year uni kid.
Is it true that you have to purchase your own corpse and you keep it for the year? Has anyone ever gotten attached to their corpse?
I also heard women can only have a female corpse and men can only have a male one, or vice versa...

Nah, the uni purchases them (well, with our fees I guess), and each tute group gets their own body that we keep for the year. Don't think anyone's ever gotten 'attached' to their cadaver (yes, it's a better word to use than merely 'corpse'), but some tutes give their cadavers pet names. The thing about gender definitely isn't true at Monash. It's probably something that used to exist when Medicine was highly paternal and society was more strict on these kinds of things.

they have family... but they gave permission before they died to be used in research or educational purposes.. so its fine

anyone want to volunteer for their body to be cut up into pieces for the uni?

The lecturer goes out and suffocates hobos with a plastic sheet.
