Title: Now lets get my writing right before sac on monday
Post by: Albeno69 on March 20, 2010, 08:15:33 pm
I have two essay topics i need help with,
1)
Nineteen Eighty Four is a presentation of Orwell's definition of dystopia and was ment as a warning. Discuss?

2)
"The structure of Orwell's novel renders his message less engaging than it may have otherwise been and aspects of his intended message therefore lack clarity". To what extent do you agree?

Well so far for each i have,

1)
Para1-
-dystopian society
-the conditions that the society have to live with,
-corruption of government

para2-
-that Orwell wrote it as a warning of what would happen and was based on starlin/hitler

para3-
UNSURE

2)
UNSURE,
dont know what to right about for the topic.

thanks in advance

Our school isn't studying Nineteen Eighty Four, which I think is a pity because I quite like it. Keep in mind, I haven't read it in a while. I would personally pick Topic One, if I had to write on one of them, but this is really only because I don't think I have a thorough enough knowledge of the text to write on Topic Two.

I assume your contention is that you agree with Topic One -- correct me if I'm wrong here, of course. It DOES say discuss though, so I think that you could also insert a paragraph that goes AGAINST your contention, but then at the end justify it by saying how it's all wrong and that it is indeed a warning. You could probably spend an entire paragraph talking about Orwell's definition of dystopia, and use quotes and text references to back it up. Then I'd probably devote another paragraph to the extent of the corruption in that society... again using text references and quotes and so on... I do think that you're on the right track, though.

For topic two... before even starting it you need to figure out what Orwell's message is, and if you thought it was effective or not. If you did, then use the essay to explain why, and if you didnt, then, again, use the essay to explain why. Hopefully you think it did but only to an extent, then I'd probably alternate paragraphs for and against the clarity of it. Beyond that, I can't really go into much detail -- sorry -- you really CAN tell I haven't read it in a while.

To prepare for the SAC, I'd personally get a quote list -- and memorise key quotes to use in the essay. Every text has these, 'must-have' examples that need to be used no matter what topic it is. Good luck tomorrow.

do you go balwyn? i heard my balwyn friends doing their sac on monday

Anyway.. I would choose Topic 1.

Since the topic is quite broad, you can explicitly talk about almost every concept Orwell has implemented into the novel. I would begin with a paragraph about how the party maintains control in the society of 1984 through sadistic means of - telescreen, the abolitionment of love and the control over emotion (two minute hate). Keep in mind to relate back to the topic so you may compare these with the "dystopic" theme of dehumanisation. A whole paragraph can be dedicated to the concept of "doublethink" as I personally think it demonstrates the sheer extremity in which Orwell has gone into with the concept shows that he is trying to warn the potential outlook of what a society can become. Relate this paragraph strongly with conformity, the alterations of the past and also the manipulation of language. Thought control should be the main topic. And lastly, fear and room 101 would be the idealistic third paragraph as the party does base its control along these themes.

Good luck!
