1. Recently, in Chile, there was a large earthquake. As a result of this earthquake the length of a
day is now 0.00126s shorter. Through the consideration of angular momentum and inertia
explain the physical principles which could account for this shortening of the day. You may
find it useful to estimate the angular momentum and moment of inertia of the Earth before and
after the quake [To do this you may assume that the Earth is of uniform density and is a
perfect sphere].
2. In Melbourne we recently experienced a spectacular hail storm. This hail storm caused
significant damage (estimated total insurance cost is approximately $800M). For example, as
a result of the hail stones hitting a 640-171 lecturers’ stationary car it now has a slightly
dimpled effect. Briefly describe the physical principles influencing the magnitude of the
impact velocity of the hail stones on the ground. Given that we regularly drive cars in the rain
and the impact of the rain drops on the car do not cause any damage, briefly explain why the
hail stones did. [for simplicity you may assume that the mass of a rain drop is approximately
the same as the mass of a hail stone].
