Title: Easy way to remember solubilities?
Post by: shokstar on April 27, 2010, 08:59:30 pm
Anyone know any techniques, acronyms, songs, poems etc etc that helps them remember solubilities? It's doing my head in

Also what errors are there in colourimetry?

Am i only finding it hard cos im  :idiot2: ?

This doesn't cover all of the solubility rules, but it's a good way to remember most of them, so you can focus on memorizing the others. As you use them more often, you won't even have to think of the mnemonic device, you'll just automatically recognize something soluble.

C A S H N Gia

Read it as "Cashin’ Gia"

C is clorates, A is acetates, S is sulfates, H is halogens, N is nitrates, and Gia is Group I A metals. —> these are all soluble, EXCEPT

for sulfates: Ca, Ba, Sr…..just remember the tv network CBS
for halogens: Ca, Ba, Sr + Happy…whats happy? Hg Ag Pb …mercury, silver and lead…add a -py to the end and all the first letters spell "happy"

and if its not part of CASHNGia… it's insoluble.

I spent like a 20-30 minute session last year 100% focused on going through the solubility table and I still remember most of it. In my mind I just stated with a particular ion (e.g. chlorate), then stated its corresponding solubility properties, and I went through all the ions until I no longer had to rely on the table to remember them.

I remember it like this.
~ Ethanoic acid, group 1 metals, nitrates and ammonium are always soluble
~ Halogen ions are soluble unless mixed with the "old-style metals" (silver, mercury and lead)
~ Sulfate ions are soluble unless mixed with calcium, barium or silver
~ Hydroxide (OH), Carbonate (CO3), phosphate (PO4) and sulfide (S2) are generally insoluble.

Yeah, it's sulfates :)
