Agreed that VCE isn't perfect, but the problems with the portfolio/interview/aptitude testing is tha you can study for that too, ESPECIALLY if you have money, hence making it redundant as a solution.

I find this particularly true in terms of uni. Some naturally gifted people are willing to to commit themselves for a year or even less to do well on their VCE, but then they hit uni and their motivation fades and they end up doing poorly or even dropping out as a result of being unable to maintain their motivation.

Well VCE is still probably a better indicator of motivaton and work ethic than an aptitude test
