My nelson psych book asked me a question that I was unable to comfortably answer.
The qstion: Explain why mnemonic devices assist recall of information but not understanding? ??? :-\
My guess: because they are techniques that aid memorisation of information but do not actually aid in comprehension of said information.
(In other words I just rearranged the question into my answer)
If an individual were to help me with this dilemma, my gratefulness and FREE KARMA:D would be at your disposal.

Don't do Psychology, but I think you've got it in the bag. In a way, I think mnemonic devices can be equated to hynopaedia. It helps for people to recall the information, but the individual may not necessarily understand the information that is to be remembered. If someone was to repeat a sentence a thousand times a day to you, in your subconscious, you may recall what the person said, but you won't necessarily understand the meaning of it. An example can be found in reference to the unit circle. Many people remember the term CAST, and hence is able to recall in which quadrants sine, cosine and tangent are positive. However, they may not necessarily know why it is that way (not being able to understand the stuff behind the mnemonic acronym).
Lol, I hope I make sense. :p

awesome brightsky!!!! yeah that's what i guessed, you don't think psychology is a good idea?
thankyou and have some karma ;)

Oh woops...just read my post through again, hehe, didn't mean it that way. Should've said, "I don't do psychology". :p
-
nonetheless, the more I think about it, the more I believe that it's as simple as what you stated.

Although what happens if you have a mnemonic device made to assist one to understand something :P

True, but generally they only provide cues for names of concepts, I wouldn't be suprised if there are some that help in understanding though... i'm lost, or perhaps my textbook is just stupid.

Nah but even then it would only assist in the recall of that information not in understanding it.. i suppose. even though that information helps you understand something else, the mnemonic device simply assists in recall and not with understanding.
i hope that makes sense :p

so in other words, it doesn't help in learning info but only with remembering it?
-
Yes exactly. probably best to just ignore what i said :p. What you said initially was good.

hahahaha, have my sincerest gratitude for the psychological debate :)
Regardless, I shall investigate the matter in question further with my teach later.

well, i'm fairly certain my multiple qstion answers are all correct, and I can only imagine 5 marks max being deducted from the short answer, so probably about 85+ out of 90.
