Title: Double Degree v. Single Law Degree [at Monash.]
Post by: eeps on August 01, 2010, 07:58:57 pm
Quick Question. (sorry if this may have been already answered!)

... Why is a double degree in any course with Law at Monash University, lower than the actual single degree in Law? E.G. Arts/Law is 98.20, Engineering/Law is 98.30, Commerce/Law is 98.25 (all at Monash)... while Law as a single degree is 99.35? Is it due to the demand of Law (by itself) as a course... or does Monash just intentionally make it really hard to get into? I asked a lady at Monash today... she didn't really give me a clear explanation as to why... :S

Thaanks. :)

Lower = less demand.
Guess the single degree is just more popular than any double degree...

It's some sort of conspiracy

Honestly, I don't think this is the case. Almost everyone I know in first year is doing law as a double degree. I can probably count the people I know doing straight law on one hand...

Further, it doesn't explain why combined degrees like Arts/Law and Commerce/Law have essentially the same TER requirements as other less popular double degrees. I would guess at least 75% of first years at Monash do either Arts/Law or Commerce/Law, yet the high demand isn't reflected in the course entry requirements.

I think Monash just arbitrarily sets pure law higher than double degrees in law. Probably because they want to encourage students to take this path, or as a strategy to compete with Melbourne Uni's JD degree. Or it could be that they just view straight law as a harder course (because you have to do 3 law subjects a semester).

Oh... right... thanks for detailed explanation. :)

Yeah apparently when the LLB existed at Melbourne Uni, 88% of the students taking it were doing a double degree, so there is definitely not more demand for single law degree as opposed to a double degree with law.

Agreed, they just try to get students to do Double Degree as then the employment rate after uni is higher  ;)

I'd guess they'd rather students do double degrees because it earns the university more money, but you'd have to look at numbers as to how many places there are and then you'd have to somehow know what demand is like.

Yeah, true. couldn't students then just drop the other course that their doing in their first/second year (i.e. drop Commerce, Arts... etc) to do Law by itself... or does that have serious disadvantages...?

Perhaps there are just fewer places offered in a single Law degree?

why so?.. I wouldn't see any reason for Monash to give fewer places just for Law by itself... :S

Itcould, again, be just to encourage people to do double degrees, or it could be because double degree places are more lucrative for the university, or it could be because they figure that more double degree places would compliment the wishes of prospective students better. All speculation.

Another QUESTION... if I were to do a double degree like Commerce/Law, would I be expected to know any Commerce knowledge, since I'm not doing subjects like Economics...? is there like a introductory lecture/or presentation on Commerce side of things (vice versa for Law, although I am doing Legal Studies currently)?

*Edit: I just meant for Commerce.

not sure exactly what you mean, but no you don't need to have ever done Commerce or Law subjects in your life.

Oh... right... to clarify, since I'm not doing any Commerce subjects (e.g. Economics - unless you include Accounting), I meant is it still viable for me to do Commerce/Law without having any real prior knowledge in Commerce?... which I now know is YES.

Thanks! :P

I never did any VCE commerce subjects and went into uni with my only commerce knowledge being supply and demand. The first year units assume you know nothing about the subject and hold your hand a lot of the way through. Even with minimal commerce knowledge you can still score HDs in your first year subjects.
