Title: Split Rings and Commutators

What the mother is the difference?

I was under the impression commutators are just used in DC generators to reverse the current every half cycle to keep it turning... but
a) I think I'm wrong and
b) wtf do split rings do then?

split ring commutators will reverse the direction of the current every half turn in order to prevent the magnetic force from reversing directions and maintain a constant torque in one direction.

from what i gathered, since the coil rotates in a circular motion all the slip rings do is enable a constant path for the electric current to take to the external circuit. they dont really do anything in terms of reversing current, or anything. But its vital to know that slip rings when used in a generator produce AC current. If you used them for a motor the motor would most likely stop working after magnetic force changes direction.
