Title: How much work should I do for further maths?
Post by: Mr Edwards on October 14, 2010, 12:22:43 pm
I use the textbook MathQuest (jacaranda) for further maths.
As preparation for the upcoming end of year exams I plan on doing the following:

-Reading all worked examples for relevant chapters (and/or maybe those little tutorials they have on the ebook online stuff)
-Reading the summaries of each chapter I'm doing.
-Completing the chapter revision exercises from each chapter.
-Doing A+ notes
-All VCAA practice exams
-Checkpoints
-10 Non-VCAA practice exams, maybe more if I have time (mainly from cleoxo's media fire account)

I'm doing the non-VCAA trial exams last because the VCAA exams are more realistic to what's going to be tested on the real one and I'm not sure if I'd have enough time to do all of them.

Is this enough work for 40+ in further maths?
Mind you, I've forgotten nearly everything from 'the core' but when I did do it I didn't find it overly difficult.

Also, note that I am not doing any actual exercise questions from any textbooks, just reading the worked examples as the questions are all pretty much the same to what's in the worked examples, just repeated a thousand times. I might just do the revision exercises at the end of each chapter. I mean, you don't need to do all the questions from the textbook, right? I know of few people who have but I think the amount of benefit from doing this is not very high and is an inefficient way to study in terms of the amount of good you can do to yourself.

Also, btw, I'm doing the following modules: Number patterns, graphs and relations, matrices.
I've neglected further maths throughout the year, however have done surprisingly well in most of my SACs.
So, what does everybody think? Is this enough work? :)

xD I don't know about Further Maths, but speaking from Methods experience, you should do at least some of the actual exercise questions. I never read the worked examples since they only said what I already knew.

Actual experience will ALWAYS own theoretical knowledge.

I prefer doing company exams then vcaa. Doing vcaa first means that you can't, near the exam period, work out if you know everything (because company exams as you said, aren't the best). Doing company first means you can burn them then do vcaa.

Not for further :P.  The textbook won't offer much related to the exam.  If your unsure of really basic theory, then maybe go through the text again and do a few questions, but in terms of exam style questions with tricks, the textbook just doesn't compare.

I skipped the whole number patterns module in the book and then just printed off the formulas, and then did prac Q's.  Making mistakes is the best way to learn. :D

Also, what Martoman said, leave the VCAA exams for at least another week. Keep doing the company ones.

You did methods in year 11 without looking at the worked examples? This implies you already knew all the basics to the methods course before you even started. Did you study most of the topics already but in a different country?

No lol, I lived in Australia for most of my life. And like what I mean by not looking at the worked examples is that most of the time, they don't provide anything insightful. Like the way I would do the questions would be exactly same as how the worked example set out to do it, so I didn't see the point in looking at worked examples if they were just goign to mirror my own thinking =/.
