okay, so this question was from the lisachem 2008 prac exam, what do you think the answer is?
Question 13
You arrive at K-Mart, when you realise that you have left your shopping list at home. In terms of the serial position effect, the items on the list that you are most likely to recall are:
A.
at the beginning of the list.
B.
in the middle of the list.
C.
at the end of the list.
D.
both A and C.
-
and another question I was unsure about:
Question 15
Which of the following is a way of testing retrieval of LTM’s?
A.
Recall.
B.
Recognition.
C.
Relearning.
D.
All of the above.
-
for question one it was most certainly A- the recency effect only applies when when recall occurs immediately after the list was learnt.
for the second question... I'm assuming you picked D so that wards me off. relearning can be used to calculate the amount of savings so I guess I wouldn't choose that one and recognition involves identification so i'm learning towards A.
of course were I in your situation in the exam i'd have chosen D.
-
actually spreadbury, I chose the same alternatives as you...
lisachem has surely stuffed up the first question here.
and the second really confused me, but I decided on A, since they are all said to be measures of retention, not retrieval.
but recall obiously involves retrieval, but I was unsure about recognition and relearning.
by the way, the answers were apparently both D
-
hmm, my skills of deduction have failed me. I gave up on lisachem, tried them for mid years and they were hopeless, so many irrelevant questions and some with incorrect answers. was getting 90-something %'s in VCAA and then a 73% in Lisachem
-
so what were the answers?
-
no spreadbury, I think you were probably right about both.
-
so should question 15 be D? or A?
-
I would say they all involve retrieval, as recall and recognition certainly do (recognition simply provides more cues)
I have a question of my own:
NEAP 2005 SA Question 7:
Harlow's experiments with monkeys demonstrated that monkeys showed progreesive efficiency in solving two choice discrimination problems
the monkeys demonstrated the concept of ___________
in the space I wrote "learning how to learn", but I was quite torn between "learning set", "learning how to learn" (which are essentially the same thing) and "transfer of learning". it probably would have been safer to go with learning set, but I know that Harlow used the term learning how to learn to describe the process the monkeys were using to solve future problems
sorry, don't know (although they may be on VN in another post) the answer

EDIT : let me explain.
whenever it says " IN TERMS OF THE SERIAL POSITION EFFECT"
you can ASSUME that its talking about both primary and recency effect.
you have to go against all logic . and just do what the question "wants" you to do.
I have seen questions like these many times.
they are just stupid
so dont worry bout them.
as for ur second question
the answer should be D.
they all involve retrieving information IN SOME WAY from long term memory ....
hope that helps :)

also what brand of prac exam is best?
-
that question is pretty stupid... But I would have gone with 'learning set' because it's a more formal term.
to be honest, all three of those options fit, I think if it came up on the actual exam you would almost definitely get a mark for 'learning set' and 'learning how to learn' and maybe even 'transfer of learning'.
the question is excessively broad, but I really wouldn't be worried about that question if I were you.

best exams = vcaa obviously
then insight ...
then ... neap

then qat
then ... lisachem
lisachem are sht . they dont explain multi choice answers and are a waste of time.

but in regards to the first question, a time longer than stm's duration has passed(getting to kmart would take more than 18-20 or even 30 seconds), so the recency effect should not be present.

those are probably handy, maybe leave both for the last 2, with the vcaa as your last.

dooood
thats what im trying to tell you..
when you get questions that state
" IN TERMS OF THE SERIAL POSITION EFFECT"
you have to straight away .. ignore logic ... and go with what they "want" you to say.
if they say
what do you think would have happened?
then u can tick the option that only had primacy effect.
however .. when they tell u . use the serial position effect .. u gotta give em a dumb illogical answer.
sorry man .. thats just how this silly course rolls
p.s
ud never get a question as shocking as that .. or even CLOSE to being as bad as that on vcaa

yeh i dont like lisachem that mcuh either. the exam format is different and has pictures and stuff on it. questions arnt grat either. I like the ones like VCAA,insight or TSSM that have explanations. Otherwise on the mc I get wrong, I sit their thinikng am I wrong or is the exam wrong.Confuses me lol
-
matt123, they want you to give the correct answer. you know why they give you the details about K-mart? because they want a specific answer about why or why not the recency effect would or would not occur. otherwise, all questions would simply be "say what you know about the serial position effect" in psychology all the questions that involve such a scenario usually have a specific aspect about the theory that needs to be considered.
assuming you know the reasoning behind the serial position effect, you would know that the reason items at the end of the list are recalled best are because they are still in STM. unless you live in the bloody K-mart the items at the end of the list would not be in your STM.
do not just blab what you know about the question, it will not always pay off, least of all in specific scenario's. always read the question, and always apply your knowledge to the specific question at hand.

yeah a lot of the time it's the exam that's wrong... I'm starting to wonder if they do it for some purposeful reason.
it's a conspiracy created by other students who want you to be confused! :D
nah jks.

This is right and true and I dont disagree with you.
its very important to show "knowledge" of what they are asking.
However ...I have noticed with alot of these crappy papers , lisachem etc etc .. they always ask dumb questions and dont test your "knowledge" , rather they test a specific concept , such as the "serial position effect".... they are stupid questions , I know ....
I have seen ONLY one similar question on a vcaa paper... ( 2006/or 05 i believe) .. where you didn't apply "knowledge" , you had to just go with the flow and put down " at the beginning and at the end of the list" WHEN infact , the answer should have been "primacy effect" and only at the start of the list.
but they took both answers ...
The fact is , and you are 100% right.
always go with "knowledge" over , the question.
:)

accoding to TSSM 2007 it is Varible Ratio not Variable Interval
