Instrumental Learning, I think, is another term for operant conditioning. It describes an organism as being 'instrumental' in associating behaviour with its consequences.
Please correct me if I'm wrong  :)

it was what thorndike called the learning demonstrated by the cat in his experiment

He also originally called it Trial and Error Learning, yet it's just the same as operant conditioning really; just allowed thorndike to come up with the Law of Effect.
