I go to Melbourne High School and we have no prescribed english reference textbook (except simple active look it up ???).
What textbooks do most schools use? Should i buy a textbook or just individual study guides/writing style guides/tutor.

My school uses "Using Language to Pursuade" in year 11 and 12, and it seems to be pretty okay.
It has a large focus on article analysis, which is always a big deal, apparently.
If the school hasn't listed one they probably don't see it as necessary, but like any subject, if you want to do exceptionally well you should look at other sources.
Check your school library?

With English you don't really need a text book :/

We have a specially-written Eng textbook - The Nelson English Manual which addresses our specific school :]
Had a skim through it though, isn't too bad I guess, but it's just like a generic textbook

Yep we have this too - it's at least better than having to buy a textbook that has long overviews for EVERY English text.. these textbooks are a waste of money as there are countless chapters that are wasted/unneeded. At least the personalised Nelson book only discusses our school's prescribed texts.. but yeah I gotta agree with you, the interpretations are, as you'd expect, highly superficial.

I think we use supplements handed out and checkpoints for our specific novel studies.

We've got insight for english and a specialy made one for our school. But I have never used an english book in 5 years of highschool and I doubt I'll use one this year. However, the english booklet from Shinny's english session that I got will probably come in handy for essay practice.

I had Insight English Textbook in year 11 but this year upgrading to Oxford's English Guide, All english textbooks are quite generic though.. If you're looking for a certain area to improve in, buy Nelson's A+ Text Response study guide thingo, heard that's good/ and the above mentioned 'using language to persuade' is helpful too :)

You're better off making your own study guides in my opinion.. your study guide would need to have things like themes, character analyses, plot, motifs, symbols and so on - your English teacher would be telling you to do work on some of these things anyway, so stretch it out and include your own personal interpretations on each con/text and create your own guide. ;)
