Okay so i got offered Science @ UniMelb. I'm up to the stage where i choose my subjects, and i don't know where to start!
i've looked at this site
https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/faces/htdocs/user/search/SimpleSearch.jsp
and
https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2011/B-SCI
I want to major in Human Structure and Function, where doe we find the prerequisites? wait i found this site
https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2011/!R01-AA-MAJ%2B1018
so i have to do the 2 subjects at the top and 2 electives? this guarantees i major in HSF ???
Thanks

Here
Pick your 3rd year subjects, open them all up and find their prerequisites. Open their prerequisites up and find their prerequisites. Rinse and repeat until the windows you've just opened don't have any prerequisites at all. Then compile all the subjects you have open into a semester by semester plan, making sure you've accounted for which semesters each subjects is taught in. You'll have gaps, but you can fill those later: only worry about the subjects you need atm.
Tip: you get to choose two third year electives for your major, so make sure you're prerequisited for all of them. :)
-
On my study plan, i have all these Level 1,2,3 Planned- i dont get how to choose subjects from there. Don't i pick my first year subjects before 3rd year ? :S sorry im really confused
-
Don't pick third/2nd year now. All you need to do is enrol in this year. If you want to do HSF, or something along those lines you'll need to do chemistry and biology in both semesters of first year. Search for those on the handbook, have a read etc.
When you want to add them, click the link "add/change subjects" under admin in the student portal. Then collapse the 2nd/3rd year part of the plan and leave the 1st year part open. Click "choose", enter the code of the subject you've chosen and select it. Then you're returned to the plan and you have to "enrol" formally.

For science subjects:
- Collapse everything.
- Expand 'B-SCI - Bachelor of Science , Admitted...'
- Expand 'BS-SCIENCE - Science Subjects , Approved'
- Expand 'BS-SCISUBLV1 - Science Level 1 , Approved'
- If you have a box in there saying 'Option for blah blah blah,' follow it across to the right and click 'Choose.'
- Search for the first year science subject you want and add it.
- Repeat 5 more times for your other first year science subjects.
For breadth subjects:
- Collapse everything.
- Expand 'B-SCI - Bachelor of Science , Admitted...'
- Expand 'BS-BREADTH - Breadth Subjects , Approved'
- Expand 'BS-BREADTHL1 - Breadth Level 1 Subjects , Approved'
- If you have a box in there saying 'Option for blah blah blah,' follow it across to the right and click 'Choose.'
- Search for the first year breadth subject you want and add it.
- Repeat once more times for your other first year breadth subject.
If you're doing any 2nd or 3rd year subjects, just go to any of the other levels that it will fit in (e.g. a second year subject can go in either 'level 1-3' or 'level 2-3') It's a bit of a nightmare, but the idea is 'stick it anywhere it'll fit.'
Sidenote: this list option is a bloody nightmare!

wow thanks guys! im starting to understand how this works! :)
Okay this in confusing me now
https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2011/B-SCI#Chemistry
i want to do chemistry but there are 13 subjects under chem. Are these all first year subjects?
im choosing a level 1 science- where are all the subjects available for this ? is it here
https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2011/B-SCI#Anatomy
where is says level 1 next to the subjects?
-
I'm in the exact situation as you, Cuddlekins!
I'm so lost, currently watching this video for help: http://www.studentadmin.unimelb.edu.au/captivate/addswapdrop.htm

i was watching that before, but i got stuck. When i click on choose and search for subjects, some of them don't appear :S i thought all the subjects here https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2011/B-SCI#structureId would appear when i type the name in. But it didn't so i dont know what subjects we can enrol in :S

CHEM10003 (610-101) Chemistry 1
CHEM10004 (610-102) Chemistry 2
Are the first year chem subjects, you can see they are level one as it says "101" and "102" others have "2XX" and "3XX" if they are level 2 or 3 respectively...
To do Anatomy subjects, you will have first needed to do first year biology, so do the first semesters of bio - choose them in the subject selection. The ones you want to do are called cells and the other is genetics (in their name) you will see they are also level 1.
You should be able to easily see what is level 1 when you are choosing subjects in your portal...
Lol, i find the system pretty simple, don't know what all the drama is about!

If you're finding it simple, I think I have issues with understanding the simplicity of such things, hahaha!
-
haha thanks vexx! its just looking at all those subjects on the site is making my head spin, but thanks for clarifying what the 1st year subjects are (should have known about the numbers haha) !
-
Once you're feeling more comfortable with the system, find the page for the major you're interested in and check out some of the 3rd year subjects you'll have to do. That way you can see what you'll be up for and what you need to do as prereqs

it only allows 5 subjects(62.5pnts) so can i put the 6th one under 'BS-SCISUBLV123' ?
i tried enrolling but it doesnt work even after logging out:
"Application Error
An unexpected error has occurred. Please log out and try again. If this error persists, please
* call the Contact Centre on 13 MELB (136352) if calling within Australia, or phone +61-3-9035-5511, if calling from outside Australia, Monday to Friday 9am-5pm AEST
* check Online Application Help for advise and troubleshooting if the error occurred while you were lodging an application for admission
Is this because we're not meant to enrol into the subjects yet?
-
No, it's because the portal sucks. I can't even log in without closing/reopening firefox.
From what I can see, you're fine to put your subject there. It's kinda hard to stuff it up, you can always just delete them
-
Yeah, you can put any subject anywhere it'll fit. There's heaps of overlap between the levels for each part.
As for the error...I dunno. Call the student centre? (you can find their number by searching for the name of the student centre on the website).
By the way, you might notice that the portal often gets caught in a cycle of page reloads when you try to go to it, so it's just a constantly-refreshing blank screen. The way to prevent this from happening is by actually pressing the logout button every time you close the portal.

My mate wants to know if there is any disadvantage of enrolling in all your subjects (for each year) now?
He wants to check that the system accepts his combo of subjects for a potential double major.
-
The disadvantage is that it's a pain to get rid of them all when he invariably completely changes his entire course plan many, many times over the course of his degree. So long as you've done all the major subjects, done all the prerequisites for the major subjects, done at least 4 breadth subjects (including at least one not at first year level) and done 300 points all up, it will be fine. Melbourne won't acknowledge him as having completed two majors, though.
-
how do u change your subjects after youve enrolled in them?
-
There are plenty of majors that don't have chem as a prereq but if you want to get into grad med/dent then you're going to need to study it.
how do u change your subjects after youve enrolled in them?
Instead of selecting "add" select "withdraw" on your admin page. That said, there is zero reason to select subjects beyond this year.
-
You want to do medicine/dentistry, but don't want to study chemistry? Just a thought, but you might be looking at the wrong career, lol. :P
-
I don't mind Chemistry, its definitely do-able. But looking at the different subjects the course offers, they just seem more appealing :)
-
Guys If we havnt done VCE chem do we put fundamentals then chem 1 not 2 and just wait for the offer to swap to 2 if eligible? Also what about summer subject, cant find the option?
-
You put Chem 1: Fundamentals for semester 1, then Chem 1 for semester 2.
As for summer semester, don't worry about it now. You don't have to enrol in 2011-2012 summer subjects until late November 2011.
-
To fulfill the second year Biochemistry prerequisite for the MD at UoM, you'll need to do Chemistry in first year.

Going by experience, you enrol in Fundamentals in Semester 1, and Chemistry 1 in Semester 2. The system probably won't let you enroll into Chemistry 2 without the Chemistry 1 prerequisite.
Then if you get 80%+ (or whatever) in Fundamentals, you'll receive an email with a letter from the Chemistry first year's coordinator, giving you the option to take Chemistry 2 in second semester without doing Chemistry 1 first. If you take that letter to the EPSC, they'll fix it up for you.
You don't enrol into summer till near the end of this year.

Thanks fellas :), also Im getting the biology subs mixed, is it, biology of cells and organisms, and genetics and evolution that are the main prereqs required?

Yup. Biology of Cells and Organisms in Semester 1 and Genetics and the Evolution of Life in Semester 2.
