I think all the monash kiddies have to go in for an "information session" and "enrolment" on two days this week and next week. WHERE DO YOU PARK? I only know of the free parking (tiny ass one) near the synchrotron and 20 minute walk.
WHERES MAO
-
I'm using my brother's car so it has the permit already ^_^
-
All blue permit areas are free parking atm as far as I'm aware.

According to the campus map, there's big blue areas at the bottom right and top left. Which one would you normally park at? I'm only familiar with the one at the front, where you turn into uni at the lights, then there's a roundabout thingie and multi level carpark on the right.

Can you give me a lift? I'm about 2 houses away from springvale south :)
-
Oh so it's probably free until the semester actually starts

LOL wait you're going to UoM though...?

I usually park at the Engineering car park at the other side of the campus, but that's because it's closer to the Med buildings and such. At this time of year, the car parks are pretty empty so it doesn't really matter where you go I guess.

Ahh that would probably be where i would park normally then when uni starts. Do you drive through the uni grounds to get there?

21st and 27th for me. what time is your 21st one?
-
10:30 :P i probably wont go on that day anyway i've got everything sorted out
-
Mm... yeah not sure if it's worth going or not. Are you the guy who lives in noble park, on the border of springvale south, who hoons in his skyline every night when i'm trying to sleep?
-
LOL no i own a corolla/accord :) not into those cars\
so yeah hopefully parking is free so i dont need to pay anything on the 28th (permit expired i just checked)
-
How much was your bro's permit? I think i read somewhere that it's $300 or $350 for blue zone. Might have been 1 semester or whole year, not sure.
-
yea it was about $350 for a year blue zone pretty expensive other unis have it for $150 a year
-
$1 a day, that's not too bad :P
-
but you dont go to uni every day of the year. Re-calculate it =P
-
It's $320

What's the deal with the main front carpark in opposite the law building where the bus shelters are?
-
So is parking in any area free before the semester starts? or what
-
So is parking in any area free before the semester starts? or what
Just blue (student) areas. Which is really the majority of them.
-
Ah okay thanks for that
-
Parking in blue is free until semester starts
-
I should also add:
Parking during SWOTVAC/Exam period is free.
Parking before semester stars (inc O-week) is free.
Parking after 4.30PM is free (parking inspectors finish at 4.30, duh :P).
Parking fines are ~$20, and you can always appeal to the transport office citing "STRESSSSS" and most of the time get it revoked.
Parking in first/second week are sometimes free (check this at uni), depending on whether the transport office have stuffed up permit orders or not (last year they did, and didn't send out permits in time and sent out the wrong permits and etc etc everyone got free parking for a week)
Parking at the synchrotron is free.
Car-pooling is free (there are SOMETIMES inspectors, so you need 2 people to avoid fine, you can most of the time talk your way out of it by saying "SORRY RUNNING LATE DROPPED FRIEND OFF AT LECTURE THEATRE")
Off-street parking is NOT free. City of Clayton fine you like a bitch, it's better to break the rules inside campus than outside campus :P
-
Thanks for the info again :)
I'm looking at the map is the carpool parking the whole of SE1? (the car park just after the roundabout when u come in from wellington road)

There are two areas, there is an arts multi-storey (turn right at main entrance, near sports/Robert Blackwood), the roof level of that is carpool. The science/eng multi-storey (Forster Rd entry), roof level is carpool and meter.

(1) The prices of permits have risen to accommodate general cost
increases, including maintenance and expenses associated with regulating
car parking arrangements, and also the continued implementation of the
University's environmental initiatives agenda.
-
I never read those emails lol
They increase prices so people won't drive? Sad
-
Chairman, if you opt for the carpooling option throughout the year... and say your carpool buddy is sick or some shit, where do you park?
You park in carpooling. If someone catches you, claim you dropped him at the lecture theatre because you was LATE. (so the art is to arrive at uni ~15minutes past the hour always). :P
-
I got a question for the current students... if you were to go to the engineering/science carpark, do you drive all the way around the outside of the uni or do you just go in the main entrance and cut through. I don't want to accidently injure any of my future classmates.
-
Dude... *I* didn't even know how much the parking fines were... *bows to your awesomeness*
I didn't either, until one of my mates forgot his red permit and got a fine and then talked his way out of it :P
Yep, he gets to use his dad's red permit, and he has enough balls to park right next to the dean's green permit like a boss.
-
(so the art is to arrive at uni ~15minutes past the hour always). :P
You actually intentionally do that? I thought it's something that just naturally happens in uni life regardless :P

I travel down Blackburn Rd so I turn onto Ferntree Gully Rd and then onto Howleys Rd (where the Fuel Zone is) and this leads to the Engy car park. Cutting through the uni from Wellington would be a bitch. So many pedestrians and speed bumps D:
EDIT: Wrong road name; Howleys I meant.

There are roads inside the campus dude :P It even has a name: ring road. google maps it
To get to engineering/science, take the forster rd exit on freeway, otherwise enjoy 20 million speed bumps/ped crossing, idiot asians who can only drive at 15kph, and bottom out on speed bumps because no one has enough patience, enjoy repair bill. :)

Get onto Normanby (the turn is where Residential Halls is) and then turn left at the first round about to get onto Ring Rd East, then right at the second to get onto Ring Rd West. You'll see Engineering car park on your left. Look at the googlemaps link Mao provided.

Yep.
[I always park on level 2, look for the car with my number plate after noon :P]

Alright, level 2 it is... if the owner of "Mao" comes out to a dint on his passenger door side, it wasn't me. (I can't control my door swing)

Probably cheaper to bus it? Considering petrol costs and parking permits etc.
Btw why do you have UOM userbar? LOL
-

Yeah once you factor in petrol, maintenance, insurance and rego... you're looking at about $10,000 a year excluding the cost of the car. Bus is like what $1000 a year? Depends how much you value your time and safety i guess.

But you'd have to pay many of those regardless of whether you drive to uni or not, since I'm sure you'd be using your car for uses other than uni.

Ohh you mean like if you have a car, but you just don't drive it to uni. I was talking about not having a car/license at all and getting around purely on public transport, in which case you don't pay any of.

Ah right. Well point is; get a car if you can. Makes life SO much better. Especially in uni considering how much free time you have.
-
Too many shit drivers on the road already, the peer passenger restriction just makes it worse. So i say dont get a car :D
-
Sorry this might've been brought up before, but where and how do we get parking permits?

$10,000 a year?! LMFAO!!! You sure that doesn't include the cost of the car? =P
My car costs about $5000 a year (petrol, parking, insurance, rego, citylink, maintenance), and I'd be paying most of those bills even if I didn't drive it to uni anyway.
Also, sometimes you should also consider the costs of public transport too... My cost v. benefits:
- I consider insurance, rego and maintenance to be like sunk costs - I pay them whether or not I drive to uni, so they don't influence my decision.
- Fixed cost is the parking permit, variable costs are citylink and petrol.
- So driving my car to uni ends up costing me $28.46 each day I go (based on 3 days a week).
- Public transport is $5.60 a day, but takes an extra 45min travel time compared to driving.
- I earn an average of about $22/hr, so that extra 45min is worth about $16.50 to me.
So I consider the difference between me driving and me using public transport to be $6.36 a day ($28.46 - $16.50 - $5.60). That's a price I'll happily pay to not have to run between platforms (I would be required to catch two buses and two trains in order to get to uni), stress about delays/services not running at all, get smooshed into packed trains, or have to smell armpits for close to 4 hours each day. Also, if I had to allow just over an hour and a half to get to uni (instead of 50mins), I'm pretty sure I'd never rock up to class... most uni students don't have much motivation to go to class when the alternative is more sleep.
-
You must live yonks from Monash then if you gotta take citylink and all that. My choice is quite simple. 10-15 minute drive vs. 90 min public transport (no direct bus line from home to uni, gotta take like a bus + train + bus).
I don't know how you figured $5000 a year... iirc you drive some fancy convertible. Say you fill one tank a week (approx $60), let's take a year as 50 weeks for simplicity, that's $3000 for petrol. Insurance for P platers is through the roof, say $4-5000 ish for that incl. rego. Now let's put aside $1000 for servicing. Take parking permit as 350. $650 reserve for fixing shit in your car in the unlikely event that they break. That's the 10000 :) May be 1-2k less depending on what car you drive.
If you're driving that far to uni, the petrol costs would be even higher... so i don't see how it can be $5000 a year unless you're uninsured and don't regularly service your car.
Oh, and then there are those like Mao who have the "mod-bug"... spends every penny on making his exhaust fartier, lowering closer to the point of immobility and 'reemz'.
-
A tank a week? o_o I drive around a tank every two. And that was driving 40 minutes and 20 km each way, every single day (damn med). And you do realise uni only runs for basically half the year right? It's nowhere near 50 weeks. Just put your insurance and stuff on your parents if they allow; far cheaper.

I though I read that you lived in Glen Waverley. There's a bus leaving from Syndal and Glen Waverley train stations that goes directly to monash.
-
Insurance for P platers is through the roof, say $4-5000 ish for that incl. rego.
what - this is wrong. My insurance (obviously not comprehensive) is $500/year. Comprehensive insurance is for suckers who buy cars too expensive for their wealth range or people who crash their cars too often.

Do you drive a prius by any chance? Unless you have a brand new spanking car that takes you 700km... my car takes me around 300km before i have to refill, and that is GRANNY driving. I'd be refilling at under 250ish if i was not being conservative.
Most companies still charge 2.5k+ under my parents name, some even want $6000+ and Allianz want $10000 lol. Too many fuckin hoons dying on our roads, leading to lighter pockets for us.

500 for third party is still a lot...

Close, but it's just a Toyota Corolla. Gets me around 550 km on a tank.

How big is your tank? Cause that sounds like some horrific economy. My car takes me 550-650km on a tank (60L)
I only have ctp insurance which is $600pa (seriously, why would I pay for comprehensive when I paid $2k for the car..)

'04 I think? It's been well serviced though.

Fuel economy for me is around 12L/100km on standard suburban driving. Hard granny driving + freeways will get me 10-11. Start and stop driving + occasional hard launching for 13-14.
Most people with cars over 3-4k would go comprehensive...
I'd rather pay more than that for peace of mind that my car will last me another 5 years until the end of uni without a good chance of breaking down.

my car is >$4k and comprehensive is for bad drivers.

With AAMI I get ~$4500 if an accident is not my fault and the party at fault is uninsured. Just drive caarefully and you save yourself an automatic $4000 PER YEAR.
-
WHAT? Your agreed value is more than double what you paid for it? dude... go crash it lol
-
I got a good deal on it in a private sale. It's really worth that much.
Only thing needed for roadworthy was new tyres and an engine mount. Very good deal :P
-
Why was it so cheap? Did it have heaps of kms or something?
-
Guy wanted to sell it fast (no, not stolen aha) 230,000ish kms but still runs nicely. I think he didn't really know the market value. I found one online at a caryard for $5000.. It was a good find :P
-
Phwoahh driven heaps, must have been used for interstate drug runs. That's why it's so cheap :P

Yeah, I drive a convertible. It's not fancy. Tank of petrol costs $45, and lasts all week (I always fill up on a Tuesday or Wednesday, when it's cheapest). My Dad's mates service my car cheap. I get a 25% discount on rego, because I've never received a fine (speaking of guys, the rego stickers are a really gross orange colour this year... just a heads up). It costs me exactly $433.49 ($577.98 - 25% discount)... I had the rego bill in front of me yesterday, because it was due. Comprehensive vehicle insurance for my family is $2200 a year for *four* cars... I still dunno where you pulled that ridiculous $5k figure from. Despite the fact that I'm the listed driver on my car, the fact that we have eight vehicles insured with the same company gets us a discount (in addition to the four cars, there's also three boats and a motorbike insured with the same company). My portion of the family motor vehicle insurance is about $800 iirc... a bit above a clean quarter of the total family motor vehicles cost. Also bear in mind that premiums for female P-platers are less expensive than those for male P-platers. Citylink costs me $11.76 for each return trip I make to uni. I do not use Citylink when I travel to exams, because I find Kings Way to be better when traveling to Caulfield Racecourse... the few minutes I save aren't enough to offset the tolls. Parking permit $350. Parking at the exam venue is free for blue permit holders. Whenever I spend a night out in the city, I use free parking.
Expenses:
Petrol: $45 x 52 = $2340
Servicing: Three bottles of scotch, a box of chocolates, a new spark plug and a new brake light = ~$300
Rego: $433.49
Insurance: ~$800
Citylink: $11.78 x 3 (times a week) x 13 (weeks a semester) x 2 (semesters) = $918.84
Parking Permit: $350 (previously $320... my first set of expenditure estimates used the old $320 figure)
Total: $5142.33
If you want to get more technical, my petrol expenses are next to nothing over summer, since I only live 5 minutes away from two of my three employers, and 10 minutes away from the third. Also, I don't use Citylink all the time for uni (though I assumed in my calculations that I do).
So... if we're done dissecting my car expenses (which I do monitor very closely, hence how I could very easily quote all these figures)... I would like to point out that I said it was *my* cost v. benefits... everyone's expenditures are different... for the most part, I wanted to point out the fact that public transport isn't always the most viable option for everyone. You just said it yourself that driving saves you about 80min a trip... surely you can appreciate that this counts for something? People should try and account for non-financial costs or benefits too.
P.S. If you're really paying $5k a year on your car insurance, you should start shopping around for something cheaper... >.>

Yeh, it's safe. And it's because he paid quite a bit for it himself.

It's a nice looking car, but it's really not worth the price tag in terms of raw power. You can get a hsv with quadruple the horsepower for less. Two seat is pretty inconvenient as well, but it's the easy way to get out of giving people lifts :P

I thought I fell in love when you said you drove a convertible. Now you have a JET SKI and two BOATS?! WHAT IS THIS? MARRY ME.

So you'll be drunk, while being drunk...while being drunk. Three levels of drunkness. No, wait, make that four. It'll be like Inception.
