Title: Booking an appointment for subjects?
Post by: Cuddlekins on January 22, 2011, 05:17:09 pm
Hey

Just wondering when do we do this? and is this on AAD day?

After academic advice day but before the beginning of the semester, as far as I know.
Arts students are encouraged to make one but for Sci/Bmed I think they rather it if you go to AAD and have your questions answered before you resort to an appointment.
But if you call up the epsc you will be able to bug them into making one for you, presumably.

You only really do it if you have some really complicated questions. Otherwise you figure it out yourself with the handbook as a guide. Consider it an independence skill. :P

Yeah I have to make one because of my credits and requests to do more subjects than necessary and etc but unless you're doing something wack, don't worry about it.
You can pretty much figure it out or ask us.  I think we're better than advice appointments.  Mine had two other girls in the same meeting.  It was awkward and not very helpful when you had 10 minutes divided by three.

Can you take excess subjects? Obviously not all will be counted

You need to have a 'good reason' or you have to pay for it upfront.  If you need it for a major or something though and you talk to people and make up a written statement it can be approved and added to HECS/HELP.
But a 'good reason' is like, 'I need it to do my major' or whatever.

They usually won't let you because if you're doing 5 subjects a semester that is intense contact hour/work wise.  But I am only doing part time for 2011 so I am hoping they will let me.

I was going to try and do it with Biology for Arts because I didn't have breadth but it was going to cost so much it wasn't worth it.

You can trust my advice for anything but biomed. If it's biomed, I'll chip in, then get overridden 10 minutes later by Russ and find out that biomed has yet again defied all other university protocol with some other ridiculous policy. :P

@Mike:

You can overload in a semester (5 subjects instead of 4). They're not 'extra' subjects as such: if you take 5 one semester, it means you have to take 3 another semester, so you still end up with 300 points overall.

EDIT: Oh, actually extra subjects? You can, but they'll generally only let you if you've changed your major and are a subject short or something like that.

That is p. much my reason.

Is it the same if you take a subject during the summer semester? That is to say, if you do a summer subject, are you still able to do 4 subjects in each semester (presumably meaning you end having done 312.5 points), or is it required that you have one semester with only 3 subjects?

This. Summer subjects aren't freebies. You basically have as many semesters (including summer) to complete the required number of subjects for your degree (300 points). If you do a subject in summer to get ahead or for prerequisite reasons or whatever, you do one less subject in another semester. If you're doing summer because you've failed something, then you don't lose any subject slots, since the fail doesn't give you any credit points and hence doesn't count towards your 300 points.

I had my appointment the other day because I wasn't attending AAD; waste of time, could have figured everything via the handbook and perhaps call up if I had a question..They couldn't really help much, can't even sort out biochemistry since I need to do forms and get official academic transcripts for uni chem before I go back in.. So you should be fine without an appointment :)

Appointments are basically when you need admin stuff done, they're rarely helpful otherwise

Tip:  Usually, when you put through your subjects, you'll have to wait a few business days to get them verified by a course advisor because this is a very busy period.

If B.Sci or B.BMed students want to avoid queues and most importantly know what subjects you want to do:

1.  Make an appointment on AAD.
2.  Select your subjects and put them through before the appointment.
3.  Make up or actually ask genuine questions.
4.  The course advisor puts through the subjects instantly.
5.  Go to Wilson Hall to get your ID (and concession card if applicable).
6.  Go to Union House to subscribe for Union membership (Optional - $99 in 2011)

There you have it.  Two birds with the one stone.  Win.  :)

There's a footnote missing from step 5, which is wait in a line the length of Wilson Hall :P

I also encourage people to buy union memberships, the union do a lot of stuff that's very important for you, as a student, so support them for it.

No way am I buying again this year, cannot afford 99 dollars for what I got last year.  Which was next to nothing and letting people in to the members lounge through the back door.

do they take a photo at wilson hall for your ID, or do we supply one?

Were do we go to make the appointment on AAD?

Also what warrants a concession, is it for transport purpose?

Your 'enrollment' is that session...SURPRISE!  In fact, even though they'd like you to think your attendance is valued, truth is you'll be in there with like ten thousand other kids and they won't know if you bothered to show up to enrollment or not so don't sweat it.

Don't the new students get a one-on-one appointment at the earth sciences building? You get your subjects put through and a whole folder of forms that you take to Wilson Hall and get your ID/diary/Myki/Metcard concession. I think you get to find out when the appointment is on AAD.

I didn't have to wait in a line though...  I was the only one there and it was 2 days after AAD.  Maybe everyone had done theirs by then?

Perhaps I was lucky.  :D

And I heard this year it's not in Wilson Hall since they're fixing the roof.

In my year, you had to make an appointment only if you had a valid reason.

Stop calling the uni, people. It gets you nowhere and you just end up sitting around at home bitching about poor service all day. Just go in like everyone else and talk to somebody.

If you weren't told that then don't bother :P Because that was the year before last and things probably changed

EDIT

Actually....

Sorry for the double post but those of you who went today did you get told how to book an appointment for Sciences?

There was a table in the foyer at the Spot that was surrounded by a crap load of people. If you managed to wait long enough, they'd give you an appointment card with date + time.

I figured that they were just for support for students who are unaware on how to choose subjects properly, I just need the ID/dairy ect

There's a stack of diaries (not sure about dairy) lying around the EPSC so I'm assuming you just pick one up from there because I sort of did that. And you get your ID from the Asia Centre.

Yeah, I saw heaps of people lining up in the Asia Centre waiting to get their photo taken on Monday.  And with diaries, yeah, I just "borrowed" a couple of them...  Just a couple.  :P

Nah, here's the game plan Russ:

1.  Go into the EPSC when it is really busy so the staff are all occupied.
2.  Carefully scan your surroundings to see if there are any observers.
3.  Go up to the desk and SWAG!*
4.  Then walk away normally.

*Make sure you have a few mates with you then it won't look so suss that you're swagging.  :)

I got my id at MDHS, my diary at one of the student centres next to/in the Alice Hoy building and was told at EPSC that they'll mail the concession form in feb...all because I couldn't be bothered waiting for the Asia Centre to open at 12 hehe

Do other year levels have to pay for the diary or something?

Anything good in the diaries - as in vouchers etc... I haven't got mine yet, planning to go during O-week.

Haha Gloamy, don't think you can get past step 2 since you may need to take a queue number to get a diary :) The staff are very fussy about queue numbers :( The other time I just wanted a form from behind the counter and she insisted I get a number even though it was 10 am and there weren't anyone there. I went over to the machine but it wasn't turned on so I went back and she was like 'Oh sorry, wait a sec'. She turns on the machine and still insisted that I took a number. I went back to the machine again and it didn't seem to be working as it should so I went back and told her nothing was coming out and that I just needed a form. She went 'oh right.' and fiddled around the machine and told me to try again. It worked of course, got a number and eventually got my form. I can't tell if they were messing around with me or if they were serious about everyone getting numbers ;D

There are piles of them in the Arts student center because Arts students know they won't need an organiser as they will never show up to any scheduled appointments anyway, they will be too lazy, too hungover or too cool.

I got past step 2 twice.  I did another "run" today at 2:43 P.M. and there were jaffies everywhere.  That meant all the staff were busy and I just swiped.

Plus, the sign says that diaries are at the front counter and "please help yourself" so I did "help" myself by taking some...  only a few...
