meeeeeee!!! team biomed!
hell yes!!!
-
WOOOOOOOO!
Thread resurrection! But it'd be good to get a list of people doing it!
-
mandy!
It is your thread. Make the list happen. :P

Resurrecting this thread to say I was right/give some of you an interesting piece of info:
As most of you are aware a lot was made of the fact that 50% of the entrants to biomed this year were below the clearly in (and thus in receipt of one of the admission guarantees). The faculty have since announced their intention to "restrict the number of ACCESS course places available, which are given to students from disadvantaged and/or rural backgrounds."
Which was what I predicted :P

Sorry to be going off topic, but I just wanted to ask, is there any disadvantage in doing Science instead of Biomed in terms of applying for PG Med, provided that you take all the prerequisite 2nd year subjects? Everyone I know who wants to do Med say that they would take Biomed if they didn't get into MBBS at Monash, but personally, I'd take Science for the opportunity to do Maths <3 and people just ask me why I don't just do Biomed...

No disadvantage to my knowledge.

+1
From what I know, you can still choose exactly the same subjects as Biomed, but I'd want to check how much flexibility you have to do maths while keeping the prereqs for PG Med
-
Kinda off topic:
What % of people sitting the GAMSAT are actually able to get into PG Med, Optom or Dentistry? Are the people taking GAMSAT mainly biomed students?
-
According to a recent information session, about 50% of students in the MD were from UniMelb, with ~75% Biomed, and ~25% Science, or at least that's what I remember. :)

You can't choose the same subjects, they're all biomed exclusive (otherwise what's the point of the course...). You can reach the same level of knowledge by taking similar/other subjects, but they're not the same. WRT to doing maths, you could do a year of it in first year at least

Fairly high (assuming you include all unis in that). And no, not mainly biomed students

Nope, it was 50% Unimelb students and of that, two thirds were from Biomed and one third were from Science.
If anyone's interested in Physiotherapy, I remember they were saying they didn't have many Unimelb applicants and had a few places left over.
-
@Funkyducky- if you don't get into MBBS, which is HIIIIGHLY unlikely knowing you...and if you decide to do BioMed, you can always do a Diploma in Maths alongside it...I have a friend doing it :)
-
Thanks for the reassurance :)
-
Well if you're sure you want to do PG med and just like maths you should definitely just do a concurrent diploma in maths along with a Bmed degree.
Or, if you are like me you may be entirely uncertain about your future prospects in the health and related sciences and thus choose science so that you have more major/pgrad options :)
You do not sound uncertain so I recommend option 1.

And here is a (terribly written) article on the topic
http://www.theage.com.au/national/education/melbourne-uni-dilutes-disadvantaged-intake-20110321-1c3uk.html
The cutoff for disadvantaged is going up from 88 to 92

As long as they don't change anything for the KLD'ers

I wonder if there is any chance of them going back in time and applying that to this year's intake :'(

The university's student union says the change shows the university is more concerned with reputation than helping disadvantaged students. ''The university has given no basis for the change other than an apparent concern that these disadvantaged students are accessing … biomedicine at the expense of privileged students,'' said union education officer Mark Kettle.
Glad I didn't give them any money this year with a comment like that.
I really wish you could comment on that article every poorly written word just made me angry.
-
I think it is fair enough, 88 is very low, they would probably struggle once they hit uni.
-
Wow, I have that selection guarantee, so nothing is changing for this year right? It will change next year. I am a current year 12, will this affect me?
-
Yes, the change is being proposed for this year afaik
-
I think the change is good. Rather than favouring the underprivileged at the expense of the privileged, I think we're forgetting all the people in the middle who missed out.
-
it just means they will get a bit more smarter students... =S
-
N it means that people like 0.05 below the ridiculously high cut off that live in metropolitan areas and are normal get a proper chance.
-
If there are less places for the SEAS applicants, that means that they'd be more places for everyone else. So, the demand for these places would decrease, and so the cut-off will decrease, making it more accessible.
And I just wanted to say that so many of the SEAS applicants really don't need special consideration. Some rural kids that I have met went to better schools than many metro students who are classified as not being disadvantaged. I really think that they should look deeper into each person's circumstances, because so many people have cheated the system.
-
+1 I've seen a friend get into biomed with seas for the most arbitrary reason. Personally, I qualify for seas, but I'm not applying because there are so many people out there who need special consideration more than I do. The system needs improvement because too many people exploit it.

SEAS doesn't help you when you have 99.95 anyway. ;)

WHO IS GOING ON BIOMED CAMP?
:D
-
Not me, there's a mid sem the day after we get back. :(
Shame, would have been awesome
-
Parrrrtiiii onz.
But I will be studying too.
-
And the biomed booze cruise is the same day as Paint n Glo
DECISIONSSS
-
Which offers the best deal on drinks?
I think Paint n Glo is too overpriced personally - the amount you pay for ticket compared to drink specials DOES NOT PAY OFF THAT MUCH, imo.
-
There will be trashier girls at Paint n Glo though :(
(the amount of teenage angst in this post is disturbing lol)
-
So the decision is alcohol specials v. sex specials?
Good luck with that one, hahaha.
