Unfortunately this is potentially not happening because I've been extremely sick recently and unsure whether I will recover by Thursday. I will post Wednesday evening about whether or not there will have to be a raincheck - it will still go ahead, but closer to semester start or even in the first week.
Apologies to everyone who was willing to come, I'll do my best to make up a another time and if you have any questions feel free to message me
Mostly an interest check thread. I know a lot of new biomedicine students have never studied biology before, since it's not a prerequisite for the course. I was in that situation and it flat out sucks, so I'm curious to find out exactly who's going into the course without it in 2011. The upside of this is that if there's enough interest, I'll run a session before uni starts to cover the basics and prepare people for the semester (I still have all my old notes/assessment/assignments from 1st year).
I'll be having a chat about this to my mate, who's co-running the BS society this year and see if we can maybe do it during semester.
So post here if you're in this situation and if you'd be interested in attending a session like this. It's open to people from any other course as well if they're taking bio for the first time.

^ This is an awesome idea. Is it worthwhile for me or do you cover topics I won't do this year?
Also, what topics are you going to go over in prep?

So were you in disadvantaged against many other kids who had taken biology?
-
My plan was to cover all of VCE biology and then do 1st semester because there's no need for 2nd semester to be taught. I certainly won't be covering topics that you won't do this year, there's no way I would have time to get to 2nd year biology (nor would I bother)
In terms of topics, major focus on cellular anatomy, respiration and biomolecules. Then a few bits and pieces from the other major areas of bio, genetics/immunology etc.
So were you in disadvantaged against many other kids who had taken biology?
Like you wouldn't believe. It's basically just VCE bio with extra stuff on top, so if you've done it before it's mostly revision with bits of extension.

You said "running a session" does this mean it'll be just one day? How long for?
Count me in then! (as long as I'm here that day o-o & it doesn't clash with uni)
-
I'm pretty sure they ran extra tutes (once per week) for first year Biology students in BSc and maybe Biomed who didn't do VCE Biology. Nevertheless, I think this is a great idea.

They told us about this but there were only 3 / they didn't help me much (unless I went to the wrong ones).

Probably an afternoon, the week before semester starts. Depends on whether I get any interest though.
-
Any non-VCE biology student would be a fool to pass this up!
Golden opportunity! :)

Hmm, maybe change title to "Biology Prep for Biomed/Science" or something :O Maybe even VCE students could attend who want to go for interest..
-
Yeah true. I don't mind if VCE students attend but it'll be during their school so I don't think there'll be a lot
-
Count me in!!
-
Free?
-
Yes, free.
-
I would most definitely come.
-
Hmm is it that much of a disadvantage to not have done biology before?
-
Can I come just for lols?
No, I'm joking. I fully support this idea and although biology isn't my favourite cup of tea, this is an excellent idea. :)
-
Since I only did average at biology, I'll come.
-
Very interested in this! :)
-
Now everyone is going it's turning into a party.
I clearly don't need to come but I want to D:

I also wanted to go haha!
Can't we come for lulz?
Maybe we could help...

Thinking thursday 17th at 2pm or so.
Opinions?

How big it feels to you depends on the person, but relative to people who have done it before then yeah it is. Granted the results aren't scaled though, so if you can do well the results of everyone else aren't that relevant.
@mavis/stonecold
If you turn up I will think of some witty way to demonstrate a biological concept using you as props :P
-
Make them be a homologous pair of chromosomes, and get them to demonstrate crossing over :D
-

How long for?
Why not have it like on a Sunday? Thursday @ 2pm may cause trouble for some people.
-
I can't go if it's on sunday, I probably can if it's thursday though....
I vote to keep it on thursday :)
-
If it's Thursday I might actually turn up because I have to go to AADII and then kill time until 6pm.
-
^fine maybe thursday is best >< but still, 2pm till?
-
If you're referring to me wanting to come for lols as a good reason to keep it on Thursday then you should reconsider haha.
I'm not a crucial part of this thing!
I'm willing to help, but I probably won't know anything considering I haven't done Uni Biol.
I will participate in a crossing over demonstration though.
And perhaps as a water molecule in osmosis.
-
Well it's not on a Sunday because I have a futsal game early evening and it's across town from where I live. It doesn't have to be a Thursday either, but I'm working Tuesday/Friday this year so that cuts down the options.
I was thinking 2pm till 4 or 5 but it's up for changes.
RE: demonstrations, my crazy anatomy lecturer last semester gave me the idea lol
-
Lol futsal.
-
It's a sport for real men.
Anyway, gonna have a look at my notes today and write out the content. Did we stick with thursday or do I need to send PMs to people

I think it's good - Thursday the 17th 2pm-5pm.
Yay, loving the idea..
-
I'll PM you lot at some point in the near future, when I get everything sorted. It'll be mostly covering the biology basics and then a few extra things I throw in
-
Omg PM me too because I'm going to end up in the State Library anyway while I wait from 2pm to 6:30. I just know it.
-
I wanna come to this! Need some intense refreshing :)
PM me details when you're ready!
-
I'm down :) Please PM me the details!
-
I'd also like to attend. I told 2 of my friends about this and they're also interested. So is a +2 alright?

It'll be in the Brownless library, just go there and check the study rooms.

Lol, I'll just go to every one and be like 'IS THIS VN?'
Okay, easier anywayyyy.
I might be bringing a friend...from Arts.

would love to come too...

It's not her fault. She's a creative writing major, too.

True, we don't blame people for their illnesses, arts students have a genetic predisposition to that sort of thing.
(also is this the pokemon girl, because if so she's awesome and welcome)

Nah this girl is different but I promise she is still cool and she may not come.
If she does come it will be because she is lonely and her train back to Morwell area doesn't leave for a while.

All good :)

Haha I'm pretty bad with internet tone.

Geez Russ, stay off the goon.
-
Hopefully I will be feeling okayish, what I've developed isn't a short term thing though so :(
-
Get well soon. :)
-
Sadly, I'm still not okay to teach.
Ideas for rescheduling? If anybody wants to meet on the weekend before uni starts, I'm (hopefully) okay for that.

Ive also forgotten everything since year 11. can i still come?

Anyone who has $ can come, even the smelly old guy who lives on my porch

Only just saw this but I'd be interested in going if you're okay having a Monash student there!
Hope you're feeling better soon

Ugh, Monash.
Yeah, of course, you'll have to come to UoM though. And thanks, I'll update the OP when I'm less dead.
