Hi guys im doing the burqa issue and contending that the full islamic veil should not be banned. I want to start with an anecdote or something like "imagine if you lived in a world where...." but im struggling with ideas :s
Help anyone?
Originally my intro was....... "Do we all want to be treated equally regardless of our origins and the colour of our skin? Do we all want the same rights to dress, preach and practice our religion freely? Well then to all those opting for the ban against the Burqa, I want you to stop and think about what you’re really protesting against. Good Evening/Morning Ladies and Gentlemen..........."
but my tutor said it sounds cheesy and that everyone will do something similar and so i need to be different. Any ideas?

You could try mixing it up and go with the word 'imagine'.
Instead of
Do we all want the same rights to dress, preach and practice our religion freely?
Imagine a world were you can't dress, preach and practice our religion freely.

In a way, your tutor has a point. In a way they don't. Sometimes a particular style becomes popular because it is actually really effective. But then it can become unthinkingly used and becomes boring and is not vivid because people are no longer receptive to it. You can probably find a happy medium, maybe try looking at things a bit differently.
Perhaps you can find a monumental win or loss for human rights (e.g. Aboriginal voting rights in Aus), briefly remind the audience of this, then tell them that we are reversing our progress and are a outdated and inhumane society. Something that is blatantly unfair nowadays (having different voting laws) would help them make the connection to something that has somehow had its lines blurred.
