Title: MBB1 Prescribed books confusion.
Post by: bomb on February 18, 2011, 08:14:49 pm
So the handbook says there are no prescribed books but the booklist through student admin says there are two :\
Which one do I go by?

If you plan on doing psych for a few years then I recommend getting Statistics For The Behavioural Sciences. Any other book you can probably do without and borrow from the library if you need it for readings.

Thanls MLB :) So I ignore the "prescribed texts" section of the booklist from student admin?

What are the prescribed texts again? But yeah, you can get away with just borrowing the texts and saving some money.

You definitely don't need that first book for MBB1, it's used in MBB2 when you actually focus on personality. Statistics is useful and you can use the 7th edition.

I agree with minilunchbox.  If you plan on doing psych and continuing psych, then it's good.

Everything else, is all but useless.  Nick Haslam's book, however, is useful for MBB2.  But you can just borrow (2 hours or overnight loans) them from the library.  But be quick though.  ;)

Haslam's book is good, read it on the plane.
Best read after lectures for me, not before as he said as I tended to drift off in the lectures if I'd read the chapter previously.
Anyway, don't buy anything called 'Writing for Psychology' or whatever it's called, you don't need that.
Statistics you should get, good for revision and another 'person' explaining things if you're crap at stats like me :D

Thanks a million guys!

So do I get Statistics for the Behavioural sciences on its own or do I get the whole shrink-wrapped pack?

Just another question, I plan on missing 2/3 of my psych lectures every week. So would these books + the online lectures  have me completely covered? (Oh and can I be failed on attendance by missing two lectures...I know I'm fine with missing one..but two...)

I bought them shrink-wrapped and sold them together, though not shrink-wrapepd because I needed to use the statistics book.

There isn't a lecture attendance but there is a tute attendance as stated in the handbook:

Quote
Participation in three hours of research activities and attendance at 80% or more of laboratory classes are hurdle requirements.

So basically you can't miss more than 3 tutes in the semester.

I bought the old edition secondhand (not shrink wrapped) and I'm still using it.

I missed 3/3 of my psych lectures every week because it was too inconvenient/time consuming for me due to VCE, but I didn't fail or even do that shit considering. But uh, it was a bit painful when it comes to cramming for the exam because you find your motivation to listening to the recordings to be 0. So make sure you remember to listen to the recordings or at least keep up to date with your notes.

Awesome, I'll miss two then. I love psych but going two days for an hour lecture is just painstaking :(

Okay I'm kinda confused about this shrink wrapped thing now haha.
When it's shrink-wrapped, there are two books in there am I right? But only the Statistics one is important?
If so, I will just getting this suffice?

Sorry to be a pain in the arse with all these questions :P
