What can we say about the character development of Paul and Keller if we had to write a substantial paragraph on each?
-
That Paul matured up through the teachings of Keller and discovered reality by exploring Keller's devastating history. He was in love early but this helped him to choose between love and lust (as he chose Rosie over Megan). He obviously developed his musical skills and challenged the world by touring Europe and participating in music competitions.
Keller was in the beginning very adamant, cold hearted and in a way isolated himself to his own lonely world. He changed with the help of Paul. He saw Paul as Eric and so he tried to develop a very close relationship with him. Even though Paul could not help him get over his past, he opens him up. For the first time in his life, Keller shares his personal expreriences of the war and the tragedy of his family with him, therefore we can understand that he felt close to him and trusted him.
This trust can be also counted as a development as it was hard for Keller to trust someone after the war.
Cbf writing more lol

As Paul journeys through the helter-skelter process of tuition and is disillusioned from his 'first impressions' of his mentor -Keller-; this poignantly explicates the fact that both characters go on to share a acrimonious relationship that is at times stoical. This stoic aspect of the relationship is paradoxically desensitized by the ever present 'emotional chink' that is further exploited by both characters who continue to emotionally engage with one and other.
Just a starter that I quickly thought up.

The journey of the Paul and Keller on a superficial level, are in parallel to one another, in their pursuit for music perfection. However, through the obstacles that they face, the outcome of our protagonists fate become very polar to one another. The continuous praising of Paul's parents and Keller's obstinate musical practices shapes Paul to become rigid and arrogant. This is stark contrast to Keller, who finds Paul as an awakening call from his harsh reality and he is able develop a relationship with his pupil. However, rather than the pupil and the master complementing one another, and endeavorer for even further greatness, their relationship is poisonous and destructive to Paul. Thereby, Goldsworthy informs the audience that the exploration in the journey of the twin characters is one that is misfortunate and tragic.
