!!!
What the hell man :S.
a)I have to scroll a hella lot more now. Honestly, I don't care for the arts humanities business etc. I preferred it when you could hide things you didn't really care about.
b)It's a lot more confusing to look at, lots of text on screen :S.
c)It just looks ugly. :S
d) are there any 'pros' to this new layout?!
I suggest that the old layout worked much better.
-
i second that
-
We can't even see what the new posts related to our particular subject (ie. math methods, chemistry) are without going into the section.
-
Actually it's a lot smaller than it was. I don't know why it seems bigger to you. I also don't appreciate the language.
The initial confusion is to be expected, it's normal to be disoriented when something you're so used to changes this drastically, but give it time and I'm sure it will be of no consequence.
As for hiding things you didn't care about, I'll look into being able to personalise which boards you don't want to see, but I don't want to create a whole lot of categories again like before.
-
I guess they tried to make it so memeber are more active, but its rather an inconvenince
-
I also don't appreciate the language.
you can change the topic title then.
anyway, hope it does end up being much better =_= The thing annoying me most atm is not being able to skim the boards and see what's going on in the specific sections i'm interested in.
-
if you want to know if your board has any new posts, the relevant sub-board will be bolded.
so you can still skim. though it wont be as obvious as before
in fact, this new layout is a lot more efficient.
-
You don't know whats happening =_=.
You know theres activity, not what this activity actually is.
-
feels weird... but i'll end up getting used to it
-
if you want to know if your board has any new posts, the relevant sub-board will be bolded.
but you can't see what specific thread is new, only the newest thread is shown on the right for the whole section.
It's good that there are more boards for the subjects, but overall it feels like there's so much on the one page.
-

and before you used to know?
you still have to opent the board to see what happened.
Blue icon: board has new posts
faded blue: sub board (s) have new posts
bolded sub-board name: sub board have new posts
how does that convey any less information than before? [where blue = new posts and grey = nothing]
-
It's the only way you can do it. Also, it promotes checking of the full board. You're more likely to just click that one post and that one thread and then go about your day, but if you're forced to actually click on your favourite board you'll see all the other new posts. It's only one extra click, and it means we can stuff ALL 125 subjects into the one page.
That's right, there are 125 individual subject boards now. I'd say the design is pretty spacesaving in that respect.

-
the layout didn't change that much.

Yes you could (to a certain extent) - e.g. if there was a new post in the Methods and Specialist forum I would be able to see both on the right side, whereas with this new layout I would only see the latest (since they fit under 'Mathematics').
Either way, I think you should keep this layout. I think the fact that you've fit every subject into the forum in a reasonable manner is enough to justify keeping the new structure. It doesn't matter that much anyway - people will eventually get used to it.
-
Yeah thats true

but the child-board names will be bolded!
What I mean is, you can't see the thread name e.g. if a Methods thread 'bucket's methods qs' had a new post as well as a Specialist thread 'Weird Integration/Trigonometry problem.', only the latest will be shown on the right with this new layout.
So if you wanted to have a quick overview of what's going on in Mathematics, you'd have to click into the sub-forum, rather than it being all displayed on the front page.
-
oh my god. it's now 10x harder to navigate
-
it is when your internet is capped. smartarse.
-
I agree with bucket people wont go to Technology section anymore because they wont notice it in child boards and they wont notice if theres a new post in it if they know where it is because its not noticable
-
yeah its a bit confusing.. so much writing everywhere and like the general discussion section is called water cooler? wth lolz i thought when it said maintenance i thought it would be some drastic change like the whole colour and format of the forum...ah wellz... lolz
-

no, people avoid it for other [known] reasons. cough.

Before, I would have been able to see straight away that the 'bucket's methods qs' and 'Weird Integration/Trigonometry problem.' had new posts without having to click into a sub-forum. Before (in terms of forum hierarchy) the Methods and Specialist forums were at the same level as the Mathematics forum is now.

All in all, I like the changes.
Dislikes
1) The Water Cooler (wtf is that. I feel like visiting an office with those big water dispensers)
2) Definetly would like to see if it would be possible to minimise those sections of the site that we have no interest in. Say I would be able to minimise technology, arts, LOTES, Health and Pyhsical Education, VET subjcts, Humanities.
That would make the new changes incredible and also really easy to see because the subjects are displayed below the main subject headings (eg Accounting in Business)
But yeh really like the changes except for the 2 points I mentioned. Just feels totally unnecessary to have to scroll past all those areas of study that I will never open
Suggestion
I think you'd find the composition of the majority of students studies comes from , Maths, Science, English and Business Studies... so maybe we could have VCE SUBJECTS BOARD 1 (not name it Board 1) and then VCE SUBJECTS BOARD 2 for all others so that the majority of people can just minimise the Board 2
-
it's bloated now.
-
I'm looking into ways of categorising them.
What do you think of making Maths/Science, English, Humanities/Arts/Business, LOTE, Physical Education/Technology and VCE VET categories that you can minimise?
-

costa will groan about that.
humanities and arts should do well together [i hope], but business should be separate
dont worry about THAT many LOTEs :P and PE/Technology should just go into the "other" category.
[ps I bet you the foundation english and generalist maths and those boards will get absolutely no traffic :P]
and when you do that, DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE ENHANCEMENT BOARDS
chuck that in a small corner in tertiary or something, the amount of traffic it has really doesnt deserve a whole forum to itself :P
-
VN caters to everybody not just its most populous traffic. I'm willing to prioritise the more active boards as I have done, but I feel every subject should have its board. :) I'll get onto the rest of the revamp tonight. I don't think I'll need to chuck the forum into maintenance for it though.
-
I like it all... except grouping Business with Humanities/Arts
Accounting, Legal and Business are three subjects in the top 12 subjects studied in VCE while VisCom is the 13th most studied. (the highest placed Arts/Humanities) I think the activity stimulated in the Business board would be sufficient to warrent its own board.
Arts and Humanities are very low activity boards
LOL @ MAO knowing me too well.
Not groaning but more so just pointing out the convinience in having a separate board for Business Studies.... wasnt it a few months ago where it was agreed that Business should be kept separate from Humanties?
-
I'm grouping them more from a subject similarity perspective. If you have like 8 categories, then minimizing them all (or even say, 5) will be ugly, no?
-
Far too cluttered now, and half the boards are superfluous. Most of the languages boards, for example, could be merged into 'Other' as I doubt the 9 people in the state who study Albanian are going to congregate on VN to discuss it!
-
Minimising them beats scrolling past them.
Most of the Business studies subjects lead to Commerce while the Arts boards lead to Fine Arts, Communications degrees etc and Humanities lead to Arts degrees so grouping them all together wouldnt really groujp them into subject specific boards.
But the low volume traffic for Arts/Humanties would be ok to group them together.
What are other peoples thoughts on this.
-
agree with both of the above posts.
whilst it is more "fair" to have a board to each subject, there really is no point having them.
the "other subjects" section worked well before.
/edit:
actually, i have just realised that it'll be a lot of work deleting these "superfluous" boards, so don't worry about them. they'll only be minor nusance to people.
imo LOTE, Technology, Health and VET should be grouped into the "other subjects" section
that leaves math/science, English, business, arts/humanities and other, total of 5 collapseable sections.
-
kk i have a fucking awesome idea. I'll make an 'other' child-board for each discipline. Then, I'll make child-child (lol grandchild) boards for the inactive ones and place them inf 'Other'. And once/if they do become active, I'll be able to promote them with ease.
However, some of the currently inactive ones, like International Studies and History: Revolutions I'm going to keep on the main board because there's a good chance that towards the end of the year, they'll pick up and I don't want to run the risk of people not seeing them. But I will DEFINITELY do this for LOTEs. I"ll do all of this tonight. Thanks for the input. :)

[and kill enhancement whilst you are at it :P PLEASE!]
-
yes mao your enhancement concerns have been duly noted
-
Not sure if I understand what ur saying enwiabe lol but Ill wait and see what it looks like once u do it tonight
-
HEY, Yiddish should be a board in it's own right >:( >:( >:(
nah, jk jk :)
btw, what is rants/debates for?
-
I wonder bubble, what could rants/debates be for.
... (it could be rants and debates! :P)
-
Most of the News and Politics board could be moved there LOL!
-
lol the new ideas sound good.
bravo everyone =]
except for enwiabe, boo you.
joking.

oh by the way, seeing how you like to put temporary boards up such as the midyear exam boards and that Thant thing, why don't you make one big section dedicated to 'temporary boards' or maybe something that sounds more exciting (i fail at creativity), as opposed to giving them whole sections like you have now.

Terrible idea Jeff. Lol
If there were like 7 temporary boards maybe you'd have a case. haha =P
Is it possible to minimise the VN news? I've been seeing the same news for the past 3 months lol. Really irittating.
Also, will the Thant Trophey thing be removed at the completion of the comp or will it be staying?
Also with midyears... maybe in a few weeks or so it can be put into archive or moved to the bottom?
-

to my knowledge it'll be archived soon. it was already part of the plan.
-
Cool thanks (Y)
-
Business should be kept away from Humanities, WE DONT DO ARTS CRAP.
anyway, I like the layout, I don't mind it.
-
What is with all the anti-Arts/Humanities people on this thread?
Grr....
-
LOL. Don't interpret me as anti-arts. I just feel that Business Studies has the traffic to warrent its own board. I don't get involved in the Arts debate lol
-

I like it. :) Except maybe separate Business from Humanities/Arts and separate PE from Technology.
(btw don't throw my precious Technology boards into the 'Other' category! :P)

I'm going to move Thant Trophy down at the end of the registration period and then archive it once the competition for 2008 is over. There will be a new one for 2009. :)

Any word on News? Or maybe some new News? At the moment its kinda just sittin there spittin the same stuff at me for months on end. Maybe for new users its useful for the first week or so but I dont know the effectiveness of havin the same news day aftr day lol
-
So uh about rejigging the forum structure again, that'll have to wait till tomorrow night because i have an early start tomorrow, and I also have to write the methods exam 1 practice tomorrow. So, yeah :P
-
Tip: There are many words more constructive than something like "shit", lol.
The "Water Cooler" thingy confused me a little, but I haven't been on here often enough lately to make any proper evaluation.
Tis your prerogative Daniel, 'rejig' the forum as you see fit.
Lol... rejig... *little dancing leprechauns throw threads everywhere*
It makes sense in my mind... somehow.
-
eee water cooler doesn't make any sense to me... sounds weird
-
water cooler: the coolest thing that has ever been invented for office use [hence the cooler]. its where non-work occurs, and you talk to random people about random things [i.e. anything other than work], make new fwends, ask out for coffee, get numbers, discuss pirates vs ninja on facebook, bitch about manager, etc.
(or in the case of coblin, rationalise everything the other says, or in the case of Ahmad, turns it into math)
and as for the water part, that's just an excuse
so, it basically means anything and everything :P
people: get out more :P

*clears throat* but you're nerd as well. :P

Ha ha.... Mao, you hypocrite...
You're a desk, remember? :P
I think my problem is that I get out *too* much :D :-X
