Just wanted to ask what people are going to choose as a chemical to study for Unit 4:
ammonia
nitric acid
sulfuric acid
ethene
-
Sulfuric acid
-
Sulfuric acid please!
There'll be more past material on it!
-
Umm, what do you do with the chemicals??? Why do you pick just one?? just curious
-
what is this? is it something our school chooses, or do we pick a chemical individually?
-
You have a choice as to which of the four chemicals you study in depth, in particular,
- factors affecting the production including rate and equilibrium position, catalysts, temperature, pressure
- waste management including generation, treatment and reduction
- health and safety
- uses of the selected chemical.
Your teacher will probably choose the one you study in class but that doesnt mean you cant also study one of the others if you prefer.
The questions on the exam will be generic so that they can be answered no matter which chemical you focussed on. For the short answer question you will need to focus on just ONE chemical for the ENTIRE question (eg you cant answer part a and b from sulfuric acid and parts c and d from ethene)
-
Sulfuric acid :)
-
did they have qs on sulfuric acid last year?
-
Sulphuric acid was a big part of the unit 3 course if memory serves. You should find a wealth of questions on it in past papers.
-
So I don't need to knoe ANYTHING on the other chemicals?
-
So I don't need to knoe ANYTHING on the other chemicals?
not to my knowledge
from what i've heard, we'll be required to know about the reactions of the particular industrial chemical and their equilibriums and other things [and the questions will be generic]
-
Ethene sounds good as well because it played a big role in the organic pathways bit in Unit 3 so we already have prior knowledge of it.
-
Sulfuric acid
-
Sulfuric acid
hey i see u live in preston, what school u from?
-
i think i'm from the only school doing ammonia...
-

Also in my profile.
-
which are the hardest/easiest?
-
yeah, is sulfuric acid easier or is it just because it has alot of past material. It looks hard to me
-
I have comprehensive notes about sulfuric acid from last year, when I have the chance I'll scan and upload them.
-
cool
-
hmmm, my teachers given us 2 chemicals to research over the holidays, strange. :-\
-
Yes, I have heard of that too. However, that is a misguided strategy, because on the exam you will have the same general question as everyone else, just that the answers differ, depending on your chosen chemical. This makes studying 2 chemicals pointless. The only reason why you'd study 2 detailed studies (in Physics, for example) is because you might get an easier question, but since (according to the sample exam), the question regarding the chemical will be the same, there will be no advantage in having that extra choice.
Also, you cant answer half of the general question with one chemical, and the other half with another chemical. Hence, you should just pick 1 and stick with it.
-
we are doing sulphuric acid at my school. and jee the process in making it.... o.O
we arnt doing it purely and simply because unit 3 was BASED nearly on ethene been made to ethyl ethanoate remember? that had an organic pathway question similar on the exam
-
Unit 3 did not talk about the production of ethene. It talked about some of the uses of ethene.
The old course featured a section on Sulfuric acid in Unit 3.

LOL going by what my teach said.... :P
-
Okay, well the "uses of ethene" is part of this unit, if you choose to do ethene. You also need to know the production of ethene though.
-
So does anyone know any good websites where i can find information?
Has anyone put any notes on here?
BTW- we can choose SUlphuric OR nh3, not both, sorry. :buck2:
I will choose sulphuric

was that the organic pathway? im going sulphuric acid neway :P so dont have to remember ethene... i hope...
-
H2SO4 :P
-
If you can write the chemical formula of your chosen chemical, you win 1 mark on the Sample Exam.
-
^ yay
As for me, H2SO4 ftw!
-
sulfuric acid because it's easiest.
-
Ammonia!!!
-
Why isn't anyone doing ammonia? I feel so lonely...
-
ammoinia is gay. it smells like shit.
JOKES :P
thats actually really werid. alot of schools are doing sulphric acid.
maybe that could be an advantage to you???
-
we did ammonia
-
is ammonia easy?
or does it have many steps?
-
very easy
-
we're doing sulfuric acid :D it gets me high....*sniff sniff*
-
lol glad u use it to get high ^.^
-
Yuck, I hate the smell of acid!
-
i absolutly DEPISE the smell of ammonia,
-
Yuck, I hate the smell of acid!
lol...i was kidding. ;)
-
chocolate + sulfuric acid = steam + black stuff :D
-

Yumm. I have double chem tomorrow, I might try this!!! I just need to go to bring a block of chocolate because I don't think our science lab stocks it. Thanks Mao, your saving me from waiting in my stupid canteen line.
-
why the hell would you bring chocolate? that's a waste of money.
just bring glucose/any other cheap sugar variant.
