Title: Who's excited for the exam?
Post by: IAmImmature000000 on June 11, 2011, 07:35:33 pm
Did two practise exams today and got 85% and 87%.
Hopefully I can pull it off in exam conditions.
Anybody else excited to see what they can do?

Was fairly eager (wouldn't say 'excited'), and then KBT came along and put me in my place :(

Depressed atm actually

Question 3a 2008 VCAA. I drew the structure of the substance rather than writing in a structural formula. I was trying to be consistent and the question simply says give the "formula". Would that have resulted in a lost mark?

Also is this an acceptable way of naming a compound.

2-methyl propan-1-ol

I actually did the exact same thing yesterday.
I think it would lose a mark.
The question wasn't very clear though.

Just checked assessment report, you would have not lost a mark there.

All we can do now is hope VCAA give us a fair and decent paper without any mistakes that make us worry unnecessarily!

Yeah hope it is decent...not like the accounting paper last year where they put a unit 4 question...on the other hand they gave us full marks for it :)

Our unit 4 chem exam had a stupid correction which made no difference and made me unnecessarily concerned. Silly VCAA forgot -s on the electrons.
Also Luken (and Thushan) you want an exam that was harder than ours!

Yeah, that's just what I don't want. I saw in a paper a few years back they did ppm = 1x10^-6 mg /L, I was like waht? Scared the shit outta me, until I read the examiners report :(

And yeah, I wouldn't mind a hard exam, as long as I know what to do :P

Good way to think about the ppm thing is to assume that 1g = 1mL  => 1000 g/L is 1,000,000 ppm. Divide by a million to get 1 ppm = 1 mg/L.

I thought you have to include the 1 in cause if you drop it it can either be 2-methyl propan-1-ol or 2-methyl propan-2-ol

Propan-2-ol doesn't exsits does it? since there is 3 carbons moveing the double bond just puts the number 1 carbon on the other end right?

C=C-C or C-C=C

You can drop the two, not the one. The reason you can drop the two is that methyl can no other place except for C-2, however the hydroxyl group can be on either C-1 or C-2, hence why you must specify.

you won't get penalised for including it, so you may as well

only get penalized if you put something like 1-chloroethane

No. You are NOT screwed. You still have today to grasp the principles. Flick through your textbook, do a few questions, try a trial exam, use VN and then you'll do well !!! :D

And finally, don't panic!

Nah, guys you will all do fine! 12 practice exams is probably more than 80% of the state would do... so you already have that advantage :D

If you need a confidence boost, redo papers! I did the VCAA 2009 one again yesterday and felt SO much better afterwards. Best to learn from mistakes before the exam so you don't repeat them!

Heh.. Is it bad that I hope I am aiming for an A? An A+ would be nice but considering I only managed 75% on the '09 paper...
I hope they don't mess the questions up. Please keep it relatively straightforward with theory! haha
