Title: POLL: Karma system
Post by: Collin Li on September 15, 2008, 10:32:20 pm
This issue was raised recently.

Vote here.

The replacement in mind is a Digg-like system where you "thumbs-up" or "thumbs-down" individual posts, rather than the user. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Its purpose has been lost.
Digg system seems good.

I don't personally hate the karma system, hence my no vote. I think it's better to just karma the person rather than the post. Most of the posts will be forgotten, which may then render a new system useless. Or perhaps we can have no system at all. But personally, I like the karma system; however, many tend to abuse it for absurd reasons.

I like the idea of a Digg system. Maybe to keep the karma side of it you could have it so someone with 10 + diggs would get 1 karma? or something?

The same thing would happen though, wouldn't it?

This sort of thing will be open to abuse

Digg-like systems are more for entire threads, rather than comments inside.

You're probably referring to a YouTube-esque comment system, where bad posts are hidden with a clickable link to make visible if needed. You could probably make do with no hiding, just the 'thumbs up' / 'thumbs down' count.

But, what if you are a VN member who has a large amount of positive karma. Will they be able to convert those to the thumbs-up/thumbs-down or does everybody start fresh at zero thumbs-up/thumbs-down?

And how do we know that this system does not become exposed to abuse also?

When you + karma, you generally are praising the post...it just gets added to their profile.

it is also a hopeless indication and prone to abuse

half the karma given out are "LOL" or "haha"

I'm pretty apathetic about the karma system, whether it goes or stays doesn't really bother me.
