question 5d, how come we only consider the j component when stating the initial velocity? exam 2

You need to consider both.
From the prev question it tells you he finishes the slide at a velocity of 6.2 m/s, and this 6.2 becomes the initial velocity for the projectile situation. You know the angle of the velocity, so you resolve it into i and j components. The i component does not change, but you have to consider the j component to work out how long it takes for him to fall down. Then using that time, you substitute it into the i component equation speed = distance/time, along with the i component of his initial speed, to find the horizontal distance from the end of the slide.
