Title: "Didn't you fail accounting?"
Post by: costargh on December 23, 2008, 05:06:01 pm
Explaining to my mother that I will be tutoring English, Business Management, Legal and Accounting next year... the first thing she says is

"didnt you fail accounting though?"

*akward pause*

... um mum, I got I got in the top 9% in the state...

mum: "ohh...."

I think she thought I failed because I did shit on exam 2

My parents thought my ENTER score was 82.75% (they rounded it off to 83%). They thought it meant I got 83% across all of my subjects (even maths :P). They were like 'can you get into law at Monash with your excellent average?'. If only parents had a clue how the system worked. :P

Hehe, remember those books 'XXX for Dummies'? They should have 'The VCE System for Dummies'. Then our parents can understand everything there is to know on the face of the planet about VCE. :D

Ah my parents still don't understand what an ENTER score is, so I don't bother... they still think I got below 70 lol ... so anyone who asks they say "Oh she did alright, she got into accounting" then they glare at me >_>.

okay you can stop trying to get others to say how your wrong and 50 is the best(which it is and i'm puzzled to why you would say that). We know, you don't have to be so arrogant and how about be thankful.

well rather than say "look how shit, a 50" in PHYSICS, be grateful that you actually attained such a score and for the mathematically inclined brain you have.

LoL I can't blame my mum for not knowing much about the VCE system, but it does have its awkward moments...
When I told my mum I got 48 she was like, "aww... where'd you lose those those 2 marks?" Then she asked me if I wanted to repeat Methods, because she reckoned I wouldn't have a chance to get 99.95 without a 50 in methods (not that I have much of one anyway).  :P

Nawwww!
My mother wouldn't know that a study score of 50 was a great one... she'd think it was 50% LOL
When I got my results for arabic, I told her I got 45 and she just slapped me across the face! >_< She thought I got 45% for arabic... So I tried to explain that 45 is actually a good score, but she doesn't believe me <_<

i rang up to tell my grandma and she goes "i'm soooooooo proud of you!"
"grandma, do you know what the numbers mean?"
"no but i'm so proud of you anyway"

a couple of days later i'm talking to my cousin who got 41 as an enter, and she goes "i called up grandma, i was like crying, and grandma was like OH I'M SO PROUD OF YOU! THAT'S SUCH A GOOD SCORE! and i was like....grandma...i did shit"

she then proceeded to tell me i'm making her 41 look bad :P

  lol at thread title

some people at my school thought that grades were all that mattered, like, if you got an A+ it wouldn't matter if you got 80% or 100%

That's how my parents think it is. Over every exam, your ENTER is the average. Like, 82.75% in one subject is similar in the rest... Lol :P

haha, my parents did the "study score of 50 = 50%?! WTF DID YOU DO?!?!" thing too. :P

I'm more annoyed about when I tell people I do arts, several people have been like "what? you draw?!" >_> I'm so sick of explaining what an arts degree is!

Grrr... Why is that such a misconceived generalisation? Drawing is only a minor aspect of Arts. The wider variety of Arts is what a student really learns to appreciate and all of the diverse elements of Arts is what makes it so unique! I wish I took up a double degree in Law/Arts (like you Nina :D), so I could show my creative flare to the wider society and make a difference. ;)

Arts is NOT only about drawing!!! :D

Uhhh... Arts isn't so much not only about drawing, as not about drawing at all. That would be Art.

lol, that's quite funny. 'Arts' refers to the humanities and social sciences. You can still show off your creative side, but not in an immediately obvious way as in art...

But back on topic; my dad surprisingly knows a lot more about VCE than I credit him for

why must they even call it arts?
couldn't it be called wizzles or something totally independent from all stereotypes?

my aim for vce was to get 50 in a subject but it never materialized. theres just something magical about getting a 50.
what was your highest? it must've been close. An ENTER of 99.70 requires high study scores regardless.
