Title: 2009 UoM Students
Post by: champorado on January 21, 2009, 08:51:19 pm
Well, all the other unis on this board seem to have some kind of roll call, so I guess this one should have one too. All you have to do is say what course you'll be starting this year, and if you already know, what you want to major in. I'll keep an updated list in the OP so people can easily see who's doing what and also find people with similar interests in majors.

I'm doing Commerce. I'll be going to the 9-10 am course info session next Tuesday. I don't know what I'm going to major in, or what subjects I'm going to do this year, so I'll be in Copland Theatre from 2-4 pm (might run into some toilet issues, but that's the plan).

Quote from: key
underlined: course
majors will be in parentheses to the right of usernames if one is specified.

Commerce

Science

Engineering

Arts

Biomedicine

Commerce wooo.

Haha I'm going to the 10-11am course info session on tuesday cause my surname begins with 'M'... too bad.

With regards to majors... I've pretty much narrowed down to either Economics, Finance or Accounting or a mixture of afew of them. I'm going to be doing subjects that allow accounting accreditation so if thats what I chose to do I'll be able to. But yeah, nothing concrete yet so don't bother putting me down for a major yet haha.

Pretty pumped for uni.

They're not strict on which session time you choose. I don't think I went to my allotted session time last year. All you do is grab a booklet that's handed out which has a time and place where you'll meet someone to help you select your subjects.

Do all the booklets have the same info (ie, even if I go to the M-Z one, I'll be able to find out when my appointment is)? I'm not much of a morning person.

Also, I did the online part of enrolment, and when I look in my student portal, I already have a bunch of subjects listed. Is this normal?

I'm doing Arts majoring in Psychology and History.

I'm pumped for Academic advice day. Should be good. I think my course info session is at 11am.

When we've selected our subjects, do we enter them ourselves or does the adviser enter them for you?

Yeah it says on the paper with your details that you're only meant to go up to step 5. I was just wondering why it already put a bunch of accounting subjects in there already. Also, did people fill out that yellow sheet with receipt numbers? I got a bit excited and totally forgot about it.

Nick:
"if you are required to meet with a student adviser, your student adviser may enter your subjects and confirm your enrolment on the spot, or will direct you to a computer lab where you can add the subjects yourself. For most students, this step is usually completed after AAD, however if you are a rural or interstate student then you will have the opportunity to meet with a student adviser on AAD."

revel: it has the compulsory 3 (micro, macro, and quantitative methods), but it also has some others.

Don't worry about it. You only have to record your receipt number in case there is an error in processing and for some reason your enrolment doesn't register. It just provides proof that you've done what you were supposed to do.

Haha! I've never seen that before! Note that the poem is Classical Mandarin rather than the Standard Mandarin (what we will be learning)

So in other words, don't get put off by that, Mandarin is not that bad :)

seriously, i am gonna just try to pick the biggest bludge subject there is. I dont see the point of wasting my time on learning something else. Just do the subs required for my major, pass them all without spending extra time on my breadth (which probably wont take me anywhere) and walk out with a good masters degree.

ANyone wanna share their views on this?

If so, wat good bludge subs are there?

I reckon you should do Poetics of the Body. I have no idea what it is, but it sounds cool.

Personally, I like the model. I'm lucky in that I have an interest in an area not covered by my faculty. I can understand where people who just want to do what their course is, though. I think the best approach is the one at Monash, where you can use those eight subjects in or outside of the faculty, or any combination in between.

IMO that's a really poor attitude towards 25% of your degree. The subjects are only a 'waste' if you want them to be. They're supposed to enrich your education and degree, making you not such a one-dimensional graduate. I'm sure if you look hard enough you'll find subjects for breath which can complement and enrich your education.

Interesting...why did you want to do Finance as your major, and what is your basis for believing that Accounting will be relatively safe from the economic downturn?

Well finance has always interested me, international markets, stocks etc etc (I know this is a very basic level, hence why I wanted to study it), however I do not believe Accounting will be safe from the economic downturn - it seems no jobs are in any career. It's just the large amount of financial jobs being lost worries me about future career options. At least, as far as I am aware, more financial jobs are being lost than accounting.

Ultimately I would love a career in finance/banking, however with the current circumstances this seems dangerous. However I have read (off BoS - not sure how accurate it is), that it is much easier to change to finance from accounting than vice versa.

Well although I'm relatively competent at maths, Actuarial seems out of the question as I've heard the maths is crazy hard, furthermore I think Specialist maths is required.
Economics also interests me, however I am also concerned at the amount of mathematics required. I do realise most commerce requires some level of maths, however I'm not sure if I'm capable of the math which economics requires.

As long as it isn't actuarial-hard, I think I shall be able to keep up. My rather average Methods mark was primarily caused by my ignorance of the level of difficulty and the amount of study/practice required to excel in the exam. Thankfully this was in year 11 allowing me to realise the amount of work needed for Year 12.

However, what would you recommend for my majors and why? (keeping in mind that I pretty much have my heart set on a career in finance/banking)

i have no idea to be honest, the whole financial sector as a whole along with the labour market for acccounting and finance grads are currently undergoing some very significant change at the moment. i've restructured my course a little so that if i want to, i can switch to an accounting major (with CA accreditation) mid 2010 from an actuarial major. in that time, i should be able to make up my mind between accounting or actuarial studies

Naturally for breadth I'd recommend taking Economics subjects as breadth: http://www.unimelb.edu.au/HB/areas/EECONOM.html

mainly that of:

316-101 Introductory Macroeconomics
316-102 Introductory Microeconomics

316-201 Intermediate Macroeconomics
316-202 Intermediate Microeconomics

316-312 Macroeconomics
316-313 Microeconomics

But the following subjects are also good:

800-116 Generating the Wealth of Nations

800-101 Critical Thinking With Data

I called up someone from the student centre regarding this a few days ago. He basically said that you won't get an appointment unless you specifically request one. Generally, you're supposed to go to the AAD, find out about all the subjects, then go home and select them online. Well, that's how I intepreted what he told me. I'm so confused.

edit: didn't see the new page. In the book it says under course info sessions: you will also be given information about services provided at your student centre, including the details of your student adviser appointment. Maybe they meant how to make a student adviser appointment?

I'm with Jamison. I'm doing the exact same thing, Accounting + Finance. Accounting is much more recognised than Economics, Mgmt imo.

Also, accounting can be very interesting. :)

[I wish IB/FICC/ECM was back to its good old levels where it was relatively easy to attain jobs :( Then I'd definitely do just a finance major lol. We'll see, hopefully this major restructuring ends soon :(. ]

Title: Re: 2009 UoM Students

It's far more easier to obtain jobs in accounting rather in economics? Plus you obtain an accreditation which increases chances of promotion or further job prospects.

Accounting is just so versatile, imo. Almost every firm needs it and assurance/auditing is a regulatory requirement, so they should be jobs available.

If you really want to do vet science you could get a student loan to cover accomdation costs.

NAB has one where you can borrow up to $20,000 and you don't have to pay anything back for 5 years.
See http://www.nab.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/nab/nab/home/personal_finance/3/10/

Pretty sure other banks have similar loans.

yeah, deferred loans is a brilliant method to finance uni costs. However, make sure that you check the interest and any terms and conditions. Unlike HECS, you will have to repay the loaned amount with interest during the given year, so ensure that you will find a permanent job by then. :)

Thank you for the advice... However, I don't know if I want to accumulate all this debt.. I would have to pay off the hecs, the loan and eventually a mortgage. Would it be unwise to borrow over $20,000 + interest (since $20,000 would probably not be sufficient for accommodation/living costs over 5 years) together with a hecs-help debt?

Yes that's true (if you mean that your debt does not incur an interest rate), they are indexed at inflation so in they don't really increase.

Depends what those funds will be used for. Say you are borrowing at 10% to finance an asset that will generate a 20% return. That's pretty good. The analogy can also extend to education, where returns do depend pretty heavily on what field you intend to go into.

But if you this 20,000 is going to be used on consumption unnecessary to your education, then it's probably not such a great idea.

Hey Nick.
Im not sure if the timetables are out/confirmed for semester 1, but yeah, at first the lectures and tutes times are randomly allocated. There is a time period however where they let everyone choose their lecture times/tute times...thats usually around when uni starts.

He's wrong. The lady I had said that tax and corp were semester 2 only, but principles of business law was either. When you add it in student portal, it wouldn't give you a drop down menu if it was semester 2 only.

Ken, I wasn't really paying attention at that point, but I heard sometime in feb. She was saying something about logging into Alloc8 at midnight or something.

"You may change your timetable online from Friday 20 February 2009." <-from that portal thing

Well, have you met them?

This happened to me, but with a second semester subject. I'm doing the prereq for it in semester 1, so it seemed kinda odd. In the auto-generated email, it says something like 'if you feel that your subject selection is correct, do not alter your studies and a [something] will review them as soon as possible'. So yeah, if you don't see anything wrong, just leave it, and then they'll confirm it the following day.

Dear Edmund,

Thank you for your email.  I apologise for the delay in response as the Science
Student Centre is currently experiencing an extremely busy period.

Your subject changes are awaiting approval by a student advisor. It is a very busy
period at the moment, so they may take more than five working days to check your

redirect you to the bottom of the processing list. If there are any concerns with
your course plan, a student advisor will contact you.

If you have any other questions please feel free to reply to this email.

Something was weird.

About Feb 4th I made changes to my timetable, everything was fine except for Calculus 2. I sent an email asking about it on Feb 6th, and got a reply on Feb 10th, saying I will have to wait 5 or more working days. On Feb 12th, I decided to change subjects again. Surprisingly, all my subjects were approved within a day. I logged in once more on Feb 15th, only to find an old version of my timetable (like the one on Feb 4th) - I had to change it again, now Calculus 2 is still pending.... Who know when it will be approved.

But here's the thing. In my enrollment summary, it shows Im enrolled in the subject:

Will see if it shows in my timetable... Otherwisee I'll go there and complain. It shouldn,t be so difficult to get approval on subjects... :crazy2:

So wait, it shows up in your home tab, but not in your studies one? You're taking accounting? What semester?

edit: Just a reminder, that LMS thing will be available for your subjects on the 20th. I don't know what content will be there, though. I remember my microeconomics subject used to be linked, but there wasn't anything in there at the time.

Yay for biology! The book is so heavy though, its like 3 kg. No joke!

Nick, I suspect that science 101 is like my transition to commerce subject. It's like a 1-hour lecture per week. Not really a proper subject.

You've got your books already? I'm gonna wait to see what my lecturers say. Those things are really expensive.

p.s. was that naww like an awww or like hell naww (oh hell no..)? i really meant it, ya know. :'(

Guys, remember when I was tossing up between Melbourne and Monash, with Monash offering me that 6k scholarship.

and I rejected it......

I've got great NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Melbourne offered me a Melbourne Access Scholarship - Commonwealth National Priority Scholarship (NPS)...
to the same amount as the Monash one. $6000 cold hard cash!!!!

I've been jumping up and down for the last few minutes. I made the right decision all along!  :D

Thanks man. I really thought I had no chance of getting one from Melbourne, as I thought if they were really going to give me one, they would have given me one earlier, the week after the results were released.

Congrats on the bursary too. Free money is good money! :)

I meant 'N'awww' as in 'you're cute, thanks'. Hence the +karma. :)

Yeah, I bought the book since all 3 biology subjects use it and I don't think they'll change it anytime soon. I got it for 95$, but the original cost is around 144$ or something. I actually went to Safeway to weigh the book on the fruit scale so .. trust me when I say it's heavy.

Also, Edmund, make sure to buy the other Biology book since we have homework ALREADY. It's $22.

Which reminds me ... I still have to do my student ID crap.  :-\

Ah, that explains it. I should've asked that girl at Melbourne Central (she had the same red bag I saw at uni). While we were waiting for the train, I noticed that there were some magazines behind us (they looked korean). I thought somebody just left them there, so I took them to pass the time on the train. After a while, one of her friends walked over and they started talking. They were quite excited, so they were talking quite fast. At some point I think I heard an 'eumnida' in there somewhere, and then a thought hit me. I had stolen her stuff! I pulled them out of my bag and asked her if they were hers and she gave me a rather nasty 'no' with a kind of 'wtf?' expression on her face while she walked away. I have a feeling this is gonna happen a lot to me next week. -_-

squance: did you know where they were? I saw people walking around with them, but I didn't know where they got them from. I didn't bother getting them on my AAD, either. :(

No i didn't know where they got those showbags but I have a heavy feeling that it might have been on South Lawn.

Oh well...
There's always next week!!
AND IM SOO  STEALING ALL THOSE SHOWBAGS!!
Title: Re: 2009 UoM Students

lol... Whats eumnida?
Title: Re: 2009 UoM Students
Post by: champorado on February 19, 2009, 07:01:35 pm
I don't know. You know how stereotypically, when you think of Greek, you hear 'os' at the end of everything (think Theodorakopoulos)? When you hear Korean, eumnida and eyo's seem to always come up. Maybe -eumnida isn't really that common, maybe it's just cos it's in the only word I actually learnt. xD 고맙습니다

squance: i looked at that guide, and a lot of clubs are offering showbags. the thing is, most of them will only give you one after you've joined them. :(

editz: google is my friend

There is also a "polite formal" style, which you will find in some of the phrases above; in this style, declarative sentences end with the particle –습니다 / -읍니다 "-(s)eumnida" and questions in –습니까/-읍니까 "-(s)eumnigga."

Yeah.
But on Tuesday..
There will be heaps of tables out on South Lawn...
And there will lots of people giving out lots of different showbags...
I'll just go get the showbags, run off to another area of the uni, get rid of all the junk and keep all the goodies (stuffing them in my bag of course) :P..and then I'll go for another round of showbag collecting :p
Greedy much, am I?

I bought my books from 'Encompass Books' which is a bookstore that specialises in Melb Uni books. They're awesome nice people, so go there if you can't find your books at Academics and General (also because they suck).

Well some woman was weighing packets of chips and eggs on the scale so..

Oh god.. did you break the scale?? lol

Thanks a lot! ^^ My student union membership is finally gonna come in handy. :D All my books have weird generic names, so I'll probably buy them there if they've got them.

username, edmund has a timetable thread in the board. if you've got timetable-related questions, maybe someone can answer them there. (on a less serious note, holy crap! 9-5!)

I looked at my timetable also, and was all "O cool, such few contact hours!", only to realise one of my subjects isn't on Alloc8...

Also, I hope to get rid of my three three-hour gaps inbetween lectures.
