When to buy textbooks?

On the back of one of the information booklets, it specifies to wait until the first lecture for advice on buying textbooks. Do you guys usually wait until that day, or buy it earlier? Are there usually changes? I was hoping to buy my books as soon as possible so I can get most of them second hand.

Also, aside from the prescribed texts, do people usually also buy the recommended texts?

Throughout the first few weeks of uni, you should be able to find your books being offered second hand, so I wouldn't stress too much about finding them now. I guess why they say to wait until the first lecture, is because the lecturer gives you some idea of how much the textbook is useful.
