Breadth: Finance or Economics

I did VCE Economics and found Economics quite an interesting subject.

I am considering doing Economics as breadth but doing so rules out some other interesting subjects like Critical thinking with data. My main concern with doing Eco as opposed to Finance is that Finance seems more practical to everyday life than Economics (eg: 2nd year subjects like Introductory Personal Finance). Is this true to some extent?

Is Uni Economics anything like school Economics?

Thanks.

For subjects like Introductory Personal Finance it is more practical, for most others, no.

I rkn if finance is your thing then your breadth ought to look like (remember that you need a min of 6)

1st yr
Intro Microeconomics
Finance 1

2nd yr
Business Finance
Introductory Personal Finance

3rd yr
Intermediate Personal Finance
Investments

Uni economics is more rigorous, more mathematical, more graphs, less memorising definitions.

Those bolded subjects should put you in good stead to be able to manage your finances.

What you should do after you get your student card, is to check out the prescribed textbooks for the subjects above and also for Economics subjects. That should give you a very good idea as to what the subjects are like.

Thanks Brendan.

How can you find textbooks for subjects (is there a list?) and would they all be at Unimelb bookshop?

Also does Finance involve Accounting stuff like making balance sheets and that kind of recording of financial transactions?

Also are they links available to past exams for unimelb subjects. Seeing the exam would give a pretty good idea about what the subject actually involves.

Thanks again.

Critical thinking with data is apparently a crap subject....heard from friends so its just my 2 cents...

Macroeconomics is extremely relevant considering the current economic condition we are in....but you need Micro as a pre-req to do that sub. But yes, finance is very useful to EVERYONE. It's all about acquiring, managing and spending funds which we all do.

To get textbooks...got to the Melbourne Uni handbook, and no you don't do balance sheets in Finance. More like calculating cash flows from an investment etc.

Also heard from friends that uni eco is not similar to vce eco, not sure tho.
