Which one of the following is least likely to be a product of a redox reaction between and metal. Show your working by including equations.

three reactions may take place depending on the conditions and relative abundance of either species. [I remember this question from the Jacaranda book]

Anyhow, the sulfate ion can be reduced to SO2, S or H2S. Write these three half equations and the half equation for oxidization of zinc and you'll have three fully balanced equations showing behaviour of sulfuric acid as an oxidant.

HOWEVER, this question is unit 4, so I don't know why you are asking, unless 1. you are reading unit 4, or 2. I have assumed completely the wrong thing.

a) H^2 is a product in a typical metal-acid redox reaction. So not this one.

For the other ones, we can say that sulfur is likely to be a key element. In the first place, it's oxidation number is +6.

b) Oxidation number changes to -2, it has been reduced

c) Oxidation number changes to +4, it has been reduced

d) Oxidation number still +6, it has not been reduced. If sulfur, oxygen and hydrogen has not been reduced (we assume oxygen and hydrogen are not key elements unless there is a known change of state), no reduction has occurred and it is not a redox reaction.

So answer is D
