We (CGS 2) won by one point, not a particularly interesting debate...

I know! We should have one by more (especially if our third speaker didn't ramble for 11.5 minutes - good speech mind you :D)

you only get scored properly in the finals i find lol.

we smash teams and only win by a point or two max. but last year in a final we won by like 4 which was a well deserved win and we actually felt rewarded

Oh, a Melbourne High year 9 team lost by something like 10 points in their first debate 3 years ago.

Then again, they did propose something like building a pipeline from Queensland to Melbourne to relieve the drought.

LOL, that is indeed a poor effort!
In our house debating comp, there was a margin of 32 points in one debate! :D

Wow, poor effort indeed.
I've only heard of 72 the lowest and 78 the highest. Even that wouldn't give more than a margin of 18 which I have never seen before! Out of the 4 debates my team have been in or viewpoint, three of them had a margin of 1. LOL

Did you have the marking scheme where marks range from 0-100? Because that's what we had and people could get 40s and 96s...
That would never. ever. happen in DAV.

Haha of course, of course.  To be fair, you get really poor quality debates in house debating too...-cough-

You get poor quality debates pretty much anywhere... including DAV regionals and DEFINITELY house debating LOL. But most teams in the DAV finals series and Viewpoint etc... are pretty decent, some are exceptional.

OMG we lost to St Margaret's by only one point in the prelims and they won viewpoint :O

St Margaret's wins debating series
April 19, 2010

St Margaret's school has won the Viewpoint 2010 economics debate. The Berwick school went head-to-head with Scotch College in the final at Monash University on Friday.

The teams debated whether Australia should accept economic refugees.

“As the people who will bear the future consequences of policy implemented by government this debate made us more aware of the issue and gave us a much broader knowledge of the refugee issue and the social and economic implications of accepting economic refugees to Australia,” Rebecca Irvine, captain of the winning team explained.

During the debating series, organised by the university's faculty of business and economics, 21 schools from across Victoria challenged each other on a range of topics, from whether we should set and enforce a maximum 35 hour working week, to whether the developing world should give prioity to development over the environment.

The series aims to encourage students to develop public speaking skills and an appreciation of economics.

Adjudicators for the debates were provided by the Debaters Association of Victoria, supported by the Monash Association of Debaters.
