I probably did about 40-60 hours on my learners - suckers (I got in under the old laws).

120 hours seems like a fairly long period of time for school kids, however there is no chance of this number being reduced (ever).  On the other hand, it'll make you a safer driver, so what's wrong with that? :)

You're all going to hate me for saying this, but I've got 120+ hours but driving to and from school everyday made it a lot easier to clock up the hours especially in heavy traffic where you just sit there twiddling your thumbs for most of the time.

But I still need 1 hour of night driving so that's not going to do me any good...

I am a hater of this 120 hours requirement (I have spent many thousands of my savings on lessons).

People learn to drive differently, some pick it up faster than others, and some are more careful than others. It would be a lot better if instructor lessons were compulsory, and after a certain amount of time with the instructor, he/she must declare you being ready for the road-test. This has its own implementation difficulties, but it assesses each person based on how competent they are, as opposed to an one-size-fits-all system.

They look over it, and select a few random entries to do a check. They make sure the kilometers match up with the time (average should be 35~40km/hr) with the given conditions, they make sure you have experienced a wide range of driving conditions, make sure your hours are added up reasonably and the signatures are not smudged suspiciously. On the odd cases that they're suspicious, they may look up the weather log to see if you were faking the weather conditions. Your attitude, nervousness, how racist they are and whether they got lucky last night can also play a major factor in whether they decide to be a massive bitch or not.

So basically, only fake hours if you know exactly what you're doing. ;) And make sure you keep a calm smile when facing the inspector.

Jeez you must have failed quite a few times, I think I spent ~$80 all up on lessons (only had one) and some of my friends who failed 3 or so times only ended up spending ~$500 on lessons.
