A leading cannabis expert has called for the drug to be legalised under licence to reduce narcotics-related crime and help close the gateway to harder substances.

Professor Roger Pertwee, who pioneered early research on the effects of cannabis in the 1960s and 1970s, said it should be sold in the same way as cigarettes and alcohol.

"You have a car licence and a dog licence; why not a cannabis licence?" he said.

Cannabis is illegal because the government can't make tax out of it.

Why? Because you can grow pot in your own house, you can't grow tobacco in your own house, hence the government forces peopel to buy tobacco and they make money. It doesn't really make sense to have pot be illegal and tabacco not. It's not even physically addictive.

Marijuana is a 'softer' drug than alcohol is. The history of why it was made illegal can be read about here, but really it has no more reason to be illegal than alcohol does. By legalising marijuana around the world we would greatly be reducing drug-related crime, the government would get extra revenue, and we wouldn't have to waste taxpayer money on arresting people who mean no harm.

Its not really the drug that's the harm, but the selling of illegal substances? It won't become legal in Australia, I'll tell you that much.

Yeah, I know that...

But tobacco needs to be under special conditions or some crap...hence you can't grow it in your own house.

They don't arrest you if you're high? Its the actual substance that gets you arrested?

I think :P

I think more people will smoke it if it was legal than if it was illegal, this might be a public health issue (more cannabis related diseases) but thats pretty much my view on the topic. I wouldn't drink alcohol if it were illegal (prohibition style that is) but it could turn to the point where we have marijuana bars or something and you have a lot more people out there getting baked than that would of normally.

It's open to interpretation whether that is necessarily a bad thing.

(Im on the left wing and i used to follow all the left represented including legalising drugs like marijuana but then i realised i dont actually believe all the left has so i decided to go with an approach of whatever works, no matter what side of the spectrum, lots of people here should do the same i reckon)

People who are against the legalization of drugs are such creeps, you can tell that they would have supported the Holocaust or Slavery or Apartheid because it was 'the law'.
Nauseating.

They should ban fast food or at tax the shit out of corporations supporting it. There are more pressing issues than some silly drug laws which aren't fully enforced anyway.

It's a plant, you stick it on the ground. You pick it up and cure it (you can use the sun for this). And then you wrap it and then smoke it. Where's the special conditions in that.

It's just not done, because it's not profitable, unlike cannabis.

100% agree with the article.

I can tell alcohol does a lot worse to my body than what weed does. In retrospect I've done a lot more stupid and dangerous shit drunk than high, weed is such a soft and weak drug it's ridiculous this plant is still illegal. Because it is illegal when I've smoked from time to time (I'm no bonghead) I've had to deal with mega weirdo drug dealers and either stink up someone's garage/car or find some other shitty place to do it. A 'cannabis bar' or something similar would be quite nice.

My friend doesn't smoke it anymore so no connections for me. I need to make more friends.

If any of you are smoking pot right now, give this a listen. You can thank me later
