Who gets owned by music analysis?

You're not alone, I also had a lot of trouble with music analysis, not only in VCE music solo perf but also in theory.
When I did music it was the old VCAA syllabus so I'm not sure how helpful I can be, but I've found with these things that it's just the getting started bit which is most difficult.
It might help to begin your analysis with a broad introduction type thing, such as:
- which period does the piece come under (baroque, classical, romantic, 20th C, jazz, impressionism?! etc.)
- what this means for the piece (e.g. if it's baroque there's likely to be a bit of counterpoint etc.)
- who composed the piece and what influences, if any, were upon him or her (nationalism? wars? depression?), and how this is shown in the piece
Then separate the rest of your analysis into each area you're supposed to analyse. Have one paragraph for tone, one for length, one for texture etc.
It'll get easier once you get started!
Again I'm not sure what the current syllabus requires so if this is bullshit feel free to ignore :P

Hah. I got A+ in the written exam and B in the performance exam for Music Performance. The theory stuff is all pretty easy (especially if you have perfect pitch :P) but the analysis can be a bit tricky. Nina's approach is pretty much spot on though.
