93-2000 was 10 years ago. Right now, the EPL has never been more competitive, as shown by the number of points dropped by the top teams. In addition, I find that the lower teams in the EPL, the likes of Villa, Bolton, Blackburn etc play far more exciting and attractive football than the lower teams in La Liga, whose football tends to be incredibly slow and unimaginative.

I don't watch lower league La Liga teams so I cannot comment. I personally think we are currently seeing a very very weak 'big 4.'

What's France like? I remember it was fantastically exciting and unpredictable before Lyon came to the fore.

Marseille are doing well atm from memory. Lyon were strong a few seasons ago in Europe, but they aren't so strong these days. Marseille lost in the European Cup final in 04 to Porto if I remember correctly. It's a good league! Lyon has dominated but I think it has come to an end now.

French football has come off the boil a bit. Their league may have become more competitive recently, but there are no French teams making headlines in Europe these days. Interestingly this has cononcided with the French national team falling to pieces.

I think their world cup debacle was directly attributable to a coach who combined the diplomatic skills of Idi Amin with the tactical nous of Andre Maginot. They'll be fine under Blanc.

But hey, it wouldn't be the first time they screwed us (think back to 06 WC dive penalty)

That was a legit penalty *folds arms*

LOL.  Don't get me started.  They (FIFA or the ref, cannot remember) even apologied for it afterwards.

I have Italian heritage and I cannot stand their football team anymore.

Blatter apologised for Australia's exit, but didn't contradict the ref. It's a pretty cut and dried free kick, Neill went to ground rather than challenge for the ball properly. Grosso probably took the fall without trying too hard to stay up but there was contact.

The French teams in the UCL rarely do well, the exception being last season where Lyon reached the Semi-final - other than that, they generally can't get past the Round of 16. The former powerhouses of French football - i.e. Bordeaux, Lyon have fallen off - lost key players and all. Marseille have always been there and there abouts. It's interesting now as Stade Rennais FC are currently top, which most people wouldn't expect to see. Bordeaux currently sit 10th. The end to Lyon dominating was bound to come - these things are cyclical.

I'd add that with the "top 2" Spanish teams - FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, that they have several world-class players in their team alone (i.e. Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Ronaldo, Kaka, Ozil etc). The other teams like Valencia, Sevilla, Villarreal don't have the "Messis" and "Ronaldos" in their team. Most of the FC Barcelona team makes up the Spanish National Football team or are part of the Spanish set-up.

Even now, Barcelona and Real Madrid are 7 and 8 points in front of 3rd-placed Villarreal and it's not even halfway into the season.

Teams from small towns seem to do well in French football; in England, most towns the size of Auxerre, Sedan, Rennes and Troyes don't even have professional sides

All three players in the Ballon D'or shortlist are Barcelona youth products! As well as Guardiola for coach! Oh man can't wait to read the comments from Real fans and EPL fanboys here http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=849672&sec=global&cc=3436  My day just keeps getting better and better!

Him and Robben are very good but unfortunately there are only three places and you can't beat the Holy Trinity these days ;)
