Someone explain to me the point of this ridiculous "campaign"

"Change your FB profile picture to a cartoon from your childhood. The goal? To not see a human face on FB till Monday, December 6th. Join the fight against child abuse & copy & paste to your status to invite your friends"

Wow. Seriously?

How on EARTH does that do anything to help "the fight against child abuse"?

What a fucking ridiculous thing to do. Do these people seriously think they're making any sort of substantial contribution to the cause?

If you want to fight child abuse, donate to a charity which specialises in this work, like the Australian Childhood Foundation. Don't sit there, change a Facebook picture and think you're adding anything of value to the world (apart from letting me know which of my Facebook "friends" are morons).

Let's start a new status "meme". Donate some money to the ACF and then change your status to "I donated to a charity to fight child abuse this week but I know its nothing compared to what your cartoon profile pictures did".*

I do not say lonely -- at least, not all the time -- but essentially, and finally, alone. so true. it's all about seeming to be doing something rather than actually doing it. i guess they will use the typical "raising awareness" reason.

Awareness before stupid facebook photo change = 'x'
Awareness after  "                                         " = x + 1
Harm caused after "                                     "     = 0

Harm caused = a bunch of self-satisfied people who walk away from their computers and feel like they did something for the children, thereby allaying their conscience sufficiently to remove the need to actually do some useful, e.g. donate to a charity.

How is this different to the "I like it on..." that I just found to be spam on my facebook wall.

It does raise some (not a lot of awareness), but you must admit that facebook is becoming a powerful medium.

You summed up what I thought. FB Morons!
About Philosophy

When I see a youth thus engaged,—the study appears to me to be in character, and becoming a man of liberal education, and him who neglects philosophy I regard as an inferior man, who will never aspire to anything great or noble. But if I see him continuing the study in later life, and not leaving off, I should like to beat him - Callicle

I dislike how we're kind of peer-pressured into it because if we don't it's a "YOU DON'T SUPPORT ANTI-CHILD ABUSE CHARITIES"
