I couldn't agree with this article more. +1. I dislike how quickly people will go to "that's offensive! burn him!" Least of all when it's not even offensive to them. Jokes need to be taken as such. If they were, the world would be so much better off. Tensions could be reduced exponentially if people could learn to take a joke as a joke.

I don't think a joke is funny if is intended to alienate, stereotype or hurt people. Additionally, I think anyone has a right to say that they are uncomfortable with something someone says on the basis that it honestly makes them feel uncomfortable, even if the joke wasn't directed at them.

Fair enough Eriny, but the joke highlighted in the article was hardly offensive to anyone, and had nothing to do with race at all; the event taking place in a dublin bar is hardly a shot at the Irish- unless we're stereotyping the name "paddy" then I don't see the grounds on which a case was created.

This instance does show the poor attitude people are taking towards humour, and how quickly people will scream racism. If I say "asian" is that racist? Some people like to call me a racist (perhaps jokingly, I don't know) simply for mentioning someone's ethnicity. I dislike hypersensitivity.

Oh yeah, I didn't have a problem with the joke in the article. I think there is a fine line that many people are all too happy to cross though. Additionally, there isn't anything wrong with talking about someone's ethnicity. I tend to have problems when people say things like, 'those ethnics, they're always doing X'. As though 'ethnic' means something and as though it's okay to stereotype based on a couple of incidences.
