I think all lecturers should be learning from him...

Has anyone else noticed that it sounds really awkward when a lecturer tells a joke and you're listening to the recorded lecture?
*joke*
*complete silence*
*lecturer continues as if nothing happened*
I know it'd be the mic not picking up the audience, but still amuses me.  :P

Could anyone doing Cost Management explain what the mid-semester results released today are out of?
Is the mark given out of 30, the marks of the test or 20, the percentage of the total grade?
Thanks
It is a mark out of 30. So if you got like a score of 18 it is 18/30. Just convert that score to a score of 20.

has anyone applied for a Mobility Grant scholarship before? I'm eyeing a short term travel subject thats <12 weeks and I just read that the grant is merit based (65% minimum). what kind of approx average would secure the grant?

(Image removed from quote.)

He was talking about Virgin airlines recently and somehow escalated to saying "I want some virgins" or something like that. He probably didn't think that his 'humorous' pun would go haywire and make him look like a sexual predator.. Lol

He seems nice though haha, always trying to provide some comic relief...

I got this when I did exchange, and I'm fairly sure my friend told me that the cutoff was like 69% in the semester I went because she had a 67% average and didn't get one.  It depends on how many people apply though, it could change!  Usually they say with somewhere between 70-75% you'd be well in the clear.  But keep in mind that you don't actually have to 'apply' for it - everyone automatically gets considered for it when they apply for their travel program/exchange.  And also keep in mind, if you have to show proof of funding or pay for anything prior to six weeks before leaving the country you'll need to have that 2500 coming from elsewhere.  They usually tell you whether you're going to receive it about 2.5 months before you leave (as long as you actually apply to do your subject before then haha) but you can't get it until 6 weeks beforehand, sometimes 4 weeks!

Hope this helped a bit...what subject is it that you're considering? :)

thanks for all the info, I really appreciate it!

Im thinking of doing this one: http://fbe.unimelb.edu.au/csc/experience/capstone/intl_accounting summer or winter depending on where I might want to go haha. It's really expensive though so any sort of grants would be great.

I'd love to do a full semester exchange as well sometime during my course, but I feel like it might be a bit too full on. Did you personally find it a bit overwhelming going on a semester exchange?

That program looks totally awesome, definitely consider it!  Expenses are always the worst part: I saved a fair bit before I left, got a HELP grant (this would be something you can look in to for a semester long exchange, it's 6000 dollars that goes on your HECS debt basically) and my mum helped me out with my accommodation costs then I got 'living away from home' youth allowance which was mega helpful to pay for all my food and any stuff I needed to buy like winter clothes or even just trips >.>  But yeah, it can be a real stretch trying to save the money but I think it's worth it.  When I came back to Australia I had 7 dollars left in my bank account.  On the way to LAX the traffic was terrible (EVEN MORE SO THAN USUAL) and the meter just kept going up and up and I started crying because I didn't think I was going to be able to afford the cab fare.  The taxi driver felt really bad and turned off the meter while we were stuck there, haha.  But even though it all means I'm entirely broke now, have no money for general groceries and am constantly stressed until I find a new job I think it's definitely worth it!  I wouldn't give up my experience just to be financially comfortable again, no way.

Re; my exchange...No!  I wanted to stay longer!  But prerequisites that I couldn't find equivalents for and the fact that my school only allowed semester long exchange made that impossible.  Going for a semester was amazing, I wouldn't have wanted to stay for any less time.  I think the most challenging part was just getting to the country by myself.  I rocked up to my hotel in New York and I was so tired and confused I just walked right into a glass door.  But that was the worst of the 'being alone' part because you make so many friends and get to do so many amazing things.  I thought I would really miss home or have difficulty assimilating into a different kind of lifestyle there but I really enjoyed every moment of it and now I really miss it!

I think it depends on the person though, a friend is currently on exchange in the US at a different school for a semester long program and she isn't having a good time at all, she's counting down the days until she can come back to Melbourne.  But I think that as long as you put yourself out there and try to make a good group of friends (exchange students are a good place to start since everyone is in the same situation, then you can find some nice locals once you start going to classes and etc) you can get yourself a good group of supportive friends and that really helps you to feel more comfortable and less overwhelmed :) Obviously it would also be different if you went to a non-English speaking country but as far as the experience goes as a whole I found it 100% beneficial and 0% regrettable/overwhelming.

wow! thank you for such a thorough response! :)  I'll definitely take on board everything you've said when I consider the option of a semester exchange.

I'm almost certainly going to go on the summer/winter break one though. I reckon its a bit more manageable haha and I'll be able to gauge what I want to do re: other exchange opportunities.

Thanks again for sharing your insight and experiences with exchanges :D

I'm still stuck on a 3rd subject for next semester.
I'm so far doing physiology, and research based physiology.
This semester I am doing human struc and func, and biochem as my 2 med prereqs.

I really enjoy more anatomy-based subjects, so I love human s&f, but not so much biochemistry.
I enjoy more memory based subjects, rather than subjects were you have to understand absolutely everything.
I was also interested in food chem, but it is only offered in semester 1.
I do not want to do anything related to biochemistry, or chemistry, or maths.

Can anyone suggest a 3rd subject for me next semester that isn't too hard, and fits around the things I enjoy?
I have looked everywhere to try and find a good subject :(

Thanks for the help, I am really stuck here, so I really really appreciate it :)
