I seriously messed up. I forgot to submit the three ILTs necessary to pass CHEM10004 by the time of the exam last week. Has anyone been in this situation before? Have I got any chance of passing this subject even with a failure to meet the hurdle requirement?

I'd say a very emotional email to the subject coordinator, or meeting with them may help. I'd make sure to explain the impact of failing this subject on your future plans, and make it sound like it is going to be a VERY big deal if you fail.

Sorry, that is the best advice I have  :)

I was considering exactly that... but wouldn't the workload be ridiculous then? (Eng itself already has a reputation of being a ball breaker not to throw pure mathematics on top now)

If you're pursuing electrical engineering and you wanted to do another maths subject I say probably a subject such as Probability would be much more helpful than Real Analysis. A few of my engineering friends who did AM2 with me this semester really hated the content of Real Analysis, they found it pretty dull and too pure for their tastes.

Some coordinators show a fair bit of compassion and mercy for us students. For the other coordinators however, they couldn't care less.

Some work experience is better then no work experience, even if it's completely unrelated.

From memory, an academic CV (for WEHI,) should have work experience, any academic prizes/awards and 'research interests' (which will probably be vague as well at this point in your life.) As with any resume - as short as possible without leaving anything important off.

Cover letter is just outlining why you'd be suitable for that Honours program.

This is more a hurdle requirement then anything - separating those who can be bothered doing it with those who don't ;)

I guess it depends on the subject coordinator, probably no, it would just look pathetic.

With bio, they just make people sit a supplementary exam (marked pass/fail to satisfy the hurdle.) No idea how it is with chem. They'll definitely have some process set up - this definitely isn't uncommon.

Email Steven Best and explain the situation. He's a reasonable guy.

Thanks for your reply man.

All of these are really interesting but the difficulty of maths just really phases me.
I struggled with Calculus 2 and I'll probably do okay on Linear Algebra this Friday, so I'm not sure whether taking maths concurrently is worth it or not.

Well I guess it all comes down to doing whatever you like the most when choosing your electives. If you find something enjoyable then you'll be more motivated to work hard.

I also heard that some people who did Engineering Maths found it easier than Calc 2, so don't get too discouraged about your experiences with Maths so far. :)

Kev, my 2c... I am shit at maths. And I'm trying to be an engineer. IMO, the more exposure to maths you can get, the better - on one condition: you're prepared to do the work. Maths stresses me more than anything else, and it gets 70-80% of my study time. But it's so integral to what we do, and it's actually really beautiful if you think about it the right way, so I remain motivated even though it can be super stressful and disheartening at times. If I had room in my study plan I would be taking stuff like Differential Equarions and Real Analysis. Because that shit is important... And actually, really interesting if you can apply it to your field. All I'm saying is, try not to be scared off. Maths is super important in an EE major - don't avoid it.

What he said. As of right now, I am slowly dying (low on coffee)... still have a lot of things to look over for discrete math & op research, and after that exam I have to revise for vector calculus within 2 days. jajajajaja

Hey scribs... serious question. I actually can do Vector Calculus & Differential Equations instead of a couple of Cell/Dev Bio or Biochem subjects next year.  Even though it will put me in epic struggle town, I'm worried about my crappy maths abilities and want to improve.  Do you reckon I should take them? I'm thinking yes.... even though the GPA will take a hit....

Anyone who takes VC semester 1 next year will be taking it with meeee :D

For engineering though, eng maths is supposed to be a good mix of the important stuff from vector calculus and differential equations with an engineering focus, AND it's only one maths subject instead of two, so there's that. I haven't taken the subject so maybe someone who has can confirm, though I know nobody takes both eng math and VC+DE's

I spent about 5 minutes trying to figure out if one of the pictures was photographed from behind haha  :o
But figured it out!
