In that case I might drop Market Negotiations in winter for Virology in Semester 2 (which my friends think I'd be crazy to do). What viruses do you study in it?

Hope you're happy with your results!

Like, every virus.  You study the different parts of viral entry, replication, etc using particular viruses as examples.  Then you study actual viruses in each lecture too (the biology and the pathology).  So the ones you focus on most are things like flu, polio, HIV (lots), SARS/MERS, hepatitis viruses, measles...then you also do brief discussions of things like relationship of viruses to cancer, antiviral drugs, blah blah.  It's kind of a similar structure to Bacteriology in that respect...but better, because Bacteriology sux.

Awesome. I'm doing it then. I guess Bacteriology and Virology are probably similar to MIIM20002 in structure.

Are you going to have to take some of our immuno labs since you're doing a PhD now? Ahaha.

It's the best major ever!  But yeah, there's a lot of rote learning and it's pretty challenging.  There's also repetition though - for instance, the immuno subject in second semester just builds on that from first, so you end up covering the same stuff twice and then adding to it, which is a bit helpful when you're taking other high rote-learn subjects like Virology.

If you're going into second year or whatever, and you're interested, just take the second year subject and see how you go with the level of rote learning in that and whether you enjoy it to keep the option open. It's only one subject that you'll need to take, so it doesn't impact on your other options as severely as some other major prereqs.

Thank you! I'm going into third year Biomed next year but don't really know what I'd like to do for a major. I was thinking either Immunology or Human Structure and Function but my thinking was was if I don't get into med, immunology might be a more employable and useful major to have under my belt. After HSF I'm reaaaallllyy not a fan of physiology but love anatomy so I'm a bit torn. I didn't do Microbes this year because I used my electives to do the prereq for the Doctor of Vet Med instead so the main immuno exposure i've had at uni has been Molecular and Cellular Biomedicine this year, which I found pretty interesting but sometimes difficult to grasp until the epiphany comes!

I hope so, but you should hope not >:D
It'll be so hard to figure out who I am, with my name and awkward demeanour.

I would honestly recommend MIIM in your position.  If you're not a fan of Physiology...anatomy is difficult to take anywhere except an applied health sciences degree.  My friends that enjoyed anatomy just took anatomy electives, so perhaps look into doing a pretty even split between the two?  With Immuno, you should only need Principles, Techniques, Med/Applied and one other subject slightly related to Immuno in some way, right?  Idk, I did the old major structure where there was no Immuno by itself, and you had to do the whole MIIM as a package.  But yeah, you should still have room for at least one Anatomy subject, as long as you have barely any breadth left to do?

I would choose Microbiology Immunology over immuno as a major probably but I need Microbes as a prereq for it so I can't do it :( So immunology it is! haha Yeah, i completely agree about physiology. I used to like it all through school and first year but last semester physiology made me question it a fair bit.

Yep, so I'd only need those three and I was looking at either Protein Structure and Function or Mechanisms of Human Disease (although I've heard that one isn't so great). I have space for one elective I think but have to do one breadth. I'm questioning about tempting fate with Australia in the Wine World or something to get an elective done in the summer hahah

Oh my god I'd forgotten how annoying enrolling in a new course is.

Hah, I went through that when I enrolled in Honours a few weeks ago. No unimelb, I haven't stopped speaking English at home.

Congrats on the PhD offer, by the way!

It could be helpful to do a summer elective!  But would you already need to have enrolled by now?  I'm not sure, I've never done one personally.

Congrats on the PhD offer, by the way!

Thanks!  I got it a while ago but just did basically nothing about it because I was overseas.  All those people that wanted notes, I am home now, so now would be a good time to remind me of:
- what you want
- who you were

Nah they don't. They sell them though but they're rather pricey (I recall ~$20). You'll be better off recording via electrical devices or by buying a diary from officeworks or something!
BSc (2015), MD1 (2016)
Tutoring in 2016: http://www.tutorfinder.com.au/tutors/detail.php?TutorID=78301
Chuck a PM if interested :)

Available for tutoring on the summer holidays for university subjects or VCe.
Also tutoring for the Melbourne uni MMIs (medical/physiotherapy interviews)

Please don't PM me for lecture slides or recordings. I don't have them anymore.

You can buy an official university one in the merchandise shop, but they're not handed out to students like they were at school. I'm pretty sure the basic ones you find at a stationery shop would be cheaper though. However, make sure you look out during o-week, you might be able to grab something for free.

They used to have full page ads for the abortion/family planning clinic in them as well :S

If you're not getting one for free, use google calendar or similar, it's not really worth paying for one these days.
