Deakin University will offer the only accelerated dual-degree qualification in Optometry, giving graduates the opportunity to register to practise in Australia, New Zealand and many other parts of the world, after just 3.5 years of full-time study.
As part of the Deakin Medical School, Deakin Optometry combines expertise in clinical education with a brand new, state-of-the-art optometry facility, innovative flexible learning modules, and a modern curriculum that reflects the clinical, managerial and commercial demands on today’s optometrists. As a result, Deakin Optometry graduates will be highly sought-after for their knowledge, skills, professionalism and ability to provide evidence-based, person-centered care focused on improving client outcomes.
Career outcomes: Optometry is the primary healthcare profession involved in detection and management of eye disease, dispensing corrective lenses and rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system.
Deakin Optometry graduates will be well prepared for a variety of work settings and career opportunities in private or public eye care, practice ownership, research and teaching, or any combination of these, in addition to recognised specialties within optometry including (but not limited to) contact lenses, low vision, paediatric vision, behavioural optometry and as associates in ophthalmic surgical practice.
Professional recognition: Deakin Optometry graduates will be eligibleto apply for registration with the Optometry Board of Australia (part of the Australian Health Practitioners Registration Authority), and the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Board of New Zealand (subject to accreditation). Once registered to practise in Australia, optometrists are eligible to register as a Medicare Service Provider.
