Doctor of Medicine though BScience

So I was looking through the Unimelb website and went to this page :http://www.medicine.unimelb.edu.au/future/md/selection.html
I noticed that through second-year prerequisite subjects in anatomy/biochem and physiology you can be eligible for Doctor of Medicine through BScience.

Now the list of subjects is here: http://sc.mdhs.unimelb.edu.au/sites/studentcentre/files/Prerequisites_VIC_4.pdf

So for my BioChem subject I chose - BCMB20002 Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. For which I have completed Chem 1 and am doing Chem 2.

Now with the Anatomy and Physiology subjects I'm having problems with. I can't find any that require 2 semesters of first year Bio.
So far I'm doing (note that I still want to major in Psych):

Year 1:
S1: Chem 1, Mind Brain Behaviour 1, Calculus 1, From Graffiti to Terrorism
S2: Chem 2: Mind Brain Behaviour 2, Calculus 2, From Plato to Einstein (they're not very imaginative with names are they?)

Year 2:
S1: Psych Core, Psych Core, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Breadth
S2: Psych Core, Psych Core, Anatomy Subject, Physiology Subject

Year 3:
S1: Psych Core, Psych Elective, Another subject, That Breadth I should have done in Year 2
S1: Psych Core, Psych Elective, Another subject, No idea

So how do you guys suggest getting that 1st year Biology done? :\

Thanks.

" I can't find any that require 2 semesters of first year Bio."

The physiology and anatomy subjects do require first year bio, so once you complete the two semesters of it, you can do Anatomy (Human Structure and Function) and Physiology (Human Physiology) both level 2 subjects...

anyway,
i would use that third year elective slot to move to second year so you do first year bio then (rather than doing breadth), and then do your second year anatomy and physiology subjects in third year as lv2 subjects. :)

Hmm I can't work out how you can do the two semesters of biology along with six level 3 subjects you need for your course. I'm assuming you're already in first year, so unless you drop calc 2 for a breadth subject, I can't see any way personally. Only way I can see, would be to overload a subject. I'd ask the student centre if there's anything that can be done.

Year 2:
S1: Psych Core, Psych Core, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Biol 1
S2: Psych Core, Psych Core, Biol 2, Breadth

Year 3:
S1: Psych Core, Psych Elective, Physiology, Anatomy
S1: Psych Core, Psych Elective, level 3 science, level 3 science

You need to do another breadth subject, which I only see you being able to do in this semester, or if you're allowed to overload.

I could obviously have missing something, being me.

EDIT: From what I remember, the requirements for BSc are (a subject is usually 12.5 points)
Minimum of 62.5 science points level 1, 62.5 points at level 2 and 75 points at level 3.
Minimum of 50 points of breadth, including 12.5 points of level 2-3 breadth
Maximum of 125 points of level 1 (10 subjects)

And for a major in Psychology;
50 points at level 3, 25 points core, 25 points elective.

But double check the handbook, cause there's probably a mistake in there somewhere.

Woops that was meant to say "I can't find any that DON'T require".

So maybe something like:

Year 1:
S1: Chem 1, Mind Brain Behaviour 1, Calculus 1, From Graffiti to Terrorism
S2: Chem 2: Mind Brain Behaviour 2, Calculus 2, From Plato to Einstein (they're not very imaginative with names are they?)

Year 2:
S1: Psych Core, Psych Core, Semester 1 Biology, Breadth
S2: Psych Core, Psych Core, Semester 2 Biology, Breadth

Year 3:
S1: Psych Core, Psych Elective, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Anatomy Subject
S1: Psych Core, Psych Elective, A level three subject, Physiology Subject

Is there a minimum number of level 3 credit points we need? I have a feeling 50 may not be enough. Just saw JR' post :\ Might have to come in during summer :'(

https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2011/B-SCI

At least 75 points at Level 3 (including 50 points of a prescribed science major at Level 3)

So you're missing a level 3 subject in your plan. Depending on whether you can find one, I'd do the breadth in summer (though remember you have the GAMSAT to study for, if you want to study for it). It's easier than finding a level 3 science subject that runs in summer.

Year 2:
S1: Psych Core, Psych Core, Semester 1 Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
S2: Psych Core, Psych Core, Semester 2 Biology, Breadth

Summer:
Breadth

Year 3:
S1: Psych Core, Psych Elective, A level three science subject, Anatomy Subject
S1: Psych Core, Psych Elective, A level three science subject, Physiology Subject

Hm thanks jaz. So I can only have 300 credit points, this means I can't be credited for Calculus 1 and 2? Seeing as I need Chem 1 + 2 for Biochem and I want to major in Psych.

I better get working on my marks haha... Anyone ever make it with a 76.25 average?

Yes, but it's not your average that matters per se. Plus, first semester doesn't mean a lot in overall scheme of things, as long as you don't start failing :P
My first semester average is probably a good 10 marks lower than my WAM

Hm, I don't think I'll start failing just yet haha.
Thanks vexx :) I downloaded the calculator but have no idea what to put in the units and GAMSA fields for each subjects :\

I hear that you need a GPA of over 6 and a GAMSAT of over 68 to get an interview. :S

download the
"Graduate Australian Medical, Dental Surgery & Optometry Admission Guide 2012"
from the gamsat website.

and depending where you want to go, some require higher than 68 - so further check pagingdr, its medicine: you'd expect it to be very competitive.

There is no university that requires 68 for an interview. The closest is Sydney, with 67 and that's been artifically inflated by people applying as a safety net.

With respect to Melbourne, it's your GPA/GAMSAT combination that matters. 6.0 is a pretty good GPA but probably isn't in the highest bracket of those applying, so you'd need a higher GAMSAT. I don't see you needing a 68/6.0 pairing though because that's a pretty strong combination. Maybe a few points lower, like a 65 to be reasonably confident of an interview offer? It's all guesswork for UoM this year though, fyi.

if 68 were the hurdle which I doubt it is, then there would be a surplus of places, you know, considering only like 8<% of people who applied got in,  ???

Took this off pagingdr, not quite sure where the direct link is, so I attached it to this post. Basically it's a spreadsheet with all the offers posted by pagingdr forum members, with the scores and type of offer. You can filter by UoM offers.

From what I can see, the majority of CSP offers have a GAMSAT (not sure whether it's UoM weighted or not) of around 63-65, and a GPA of 6.50-6.70. That's probably something to aim for.

I sat the GAMSAT for the first time earlier in the year (I'm a second year), and score 59 UoM-weighted (63 standard weighting). So I have a bit of work to do :-\. Currently have a GPA of 6.59, after a H3 and two H2B's in first year. Hopefully I get decent marks this semester.

EDIT: The thing to remember is, each year it may gradually get higher as more students become eligible to apply.
