AC vs DC motors

Hey guys,
I was looking at someone's notes I found here and it said that for DC motors the coil rotates continuously in the same direction due to the split-rings while in AC the coil alternates directions because a slip ring is used.

My impression was that both types rotated continuously in the same direction they just employed different methods to get the current to alternate direction in the coil.

Would anyone be able to clear this up for me?

Pretty sure they only rotate in one direction always, with different commutators.

+1, I don't see a use for a shaft that repeadily swaps direction, especially 50 times a second.

Yeah I believe that the reason AC is used is so that it actually does keep spinning, it would make no sense to replace DC with AC (because you need the current to swap direction to keep the motor going) and then stop it from alternating the current and thus keeping it spinning
