Generally speaking, some subjects have two hours worth of lectures and some have three (usually science). In the case of Edmund he's slack and is only doing two subjects (only joking :P).

You get to pick your timetable but there are constraints in terms of clashes and so on. Choice usually increases with the number of students in your subject, but some time slots are quite competitive so you have to get in early. For example, there are three Biology lectures for me each week, with the 11.15 time-slot being booked full pretty early. It didn't fuss me, but it fussed others and people started turning up to that session even when it wasn't on their timetable so the lecture theatre was over-crammed and they had to kick people out once they realised what was happening.

Everything shows up on the timetable though, skipping lectures is always an option.

Edmund is probably only showing the classes he actually goes to.

As for choice, after 1st year there's practically none. You choose a subject. It has a lecture slot and a few tute slots. You pick a tute slot and that's it (frequently the subject will double up, with multiple tutes in different rooms in the same time slot)

How can you only do two subjects? Pretty easy to get a degree then isn't it? :P

Oh ok so you get to pick your times. I'll remember this next year when I make my timetable so I get all the awesome times and have days free or not wake up so early :)

EDIT: Just read Russ' post above. Is there really no choice? I was looking at the timetable for Introductory Microeconomics (https://sis.unimelb.edu.au/cgi-bin/subjects.pl?scode=ECON10004&year=2011) and there's like a lecture/tute every day at almost every time slot LOL

You can do up to 4 subjects a semester, 5 if you're stupidreally keen. You have to do 24 subjects to graduate - if you want to do 2 subjects a semester, yeah it'll be much easier but you'll take 6 years rather than 3 to get your degree.

Or 2 during summer then 2 during semester 1

Your looking at Microeconomics in semester 1, semester 2 had only one lecture stream to begin with, but after enrolments exceeded their expectations they added another, which was particularly annoying seeing that I had already registered in other classes for said stream, although, one clash isnt too bad where theres lectopia :D

1st year subjects are huge because everyone has to do them before choosing where they want to focus their subjects. So microeconomics, calculus, chemistry etc. all have a fair bit of choice. But once you start taking a major etc. class sizes shrink dramatically, so there's no reason for the faculty to run 99 tute slots.

Case in point, i had an 8am lecture last semester. Nobody wanted to go, but it was the only time available.

TRUUF.  Sucks when your only lecture for the week isn't recorded and like, 8 or 9am on a Monday, also.

No official contact hours. But in reality, it is the most time-consuming course ever.
