I'm not sure how much you know about actuarial studies but basically there are three sets of exams you need to pass to become fully qualified. Melbourne students who do the three year bachelor program get exemption from most of part one and all of aprt one and two if they do the extra honors year. the program has been running for ages, and the centre has loads of experience.
Monash only just got exemption for part one this year, and not sure about two. essentailly melbounre have a much more respected actuarial program due to their experience. Going to melbounre will give you a better course for actuarial studies and it has more prestige in this area and you are much more liekyl to get the better jobs with a melbouren degree comapred to monash

agreed that melbourne has a more established acturial program and should go there if you want to major it. However, monash has a lot more majors on offer in the commerce field than melbourne.
A very good point about melbourne is that they have summer semester for commerce especially so u can fasttrack, or pace out your degree, or catchup from fails or under circumstances during those periods. They offer alot of their commerce units in the summer most of which are relevant like accounting, finance etc....
Monash has that only for like ... random units in commerce like really random ones in the summer that arent worth doing .... or u can go to malaysia monash where they have more... but y go all the way to malaysia...
i know im a monash student but one of the things i cringe about that melbourne has is that summer semester option which has so many uses.

does monash really offer that many majors that Melbourne doesn't?
taiga:
Monash Comm (Single) scholarships start from 97.8 or something like that. They really take care of those students in that course as well.
There are also plenty of majors, plenty of international exchange opportunities etc. The Involvement groups are also amazing (MFA, SICC, BCSS) and can get you contacts with plenty of firms. There are also leadership programs which help you develop more contacts, and can even get you early work (I'm working doing social media marketing for a small firm as a result of my involvement with this stuff).
With regard to actuary if you start your degree next year you should be exempt from Part 1 and 2 by the end of your degree, but of course Melbourne has more experience with that stuff.
I really don't think the difference between Melbourne and Monash is that big if you're talking in terms of single degree commerce. They're both respectable universities. It's really going to be your own capabilities and experiences which will push you through to a great job.
THAT SAID, if I wanted to do single commerce, my opinion during year 12 would have led me to go to Melbourne (just because there's a higher ATAR cutoff).

Which is a bit silly given that the UoM single only has a higher cutoff due to not offering doubles like Monash.

that is true, do not let ATAR requirement fully distinguish which course is better. because its all about supply and demand. FOR EXAMPLE if monash had 1000 apply for commerce(single degree) and they only accept 300 people and the lowest score to get in (without seas or wateva) is like 95.XX then the ATAR requirement would be around 95ish. So in a sense its the students who control the ATAR requirement, does not necessarily mean one course is betta than the other just means that a large bulk of the students at uni of melb comm had atars of 94ish+ . hope that helps.
