UMAT HELP!?
« on: September 21, 2011, 06:41:54 pm »

I just really need to figure out a couple of things with the UMAT since EVERYONE is giving me different answers!

To put it bluntly, I didn't do well in the UMAT.

Prospects for studying Med @ Monash have gone considerably down but I really need to know where I stand in order to know whether I can chill out for the rest of the year or still try my best in my ATAR to scrape an interview (seeing as my next preference is Science @ Melbourne which requires a relatively lower ATAR).

So my scores were:

49 for Section 1
55 for Section 2
68 for Section 3
Overall score: 57
77th percentile

Just give me the skinny guys.

Do I have ANY possible chance of getting an interview for Monash Med? Will an amazing ATAR give me the slightest chance at an interview?

Be harsh with me, I wouldn't really mind right now.

** Sorry for posting in a non-UMAT forum, I just needed a bit of thread exposure :( **

I think the only chance you have is getting a 99.95 and then they'll give you an interview. Not sure about the ATAR/UMAT stream of interviews, but I think the UMAT scores will still have to be reasonably high with a high ATAR. But I could be wrong, I'm just guessing... :)

I agree with jane, 99.95 would get you an interview but the ATAR/UMAT stream would probably be out of reach sorry :(

Science at UoM is perfectly viable, considered some of the health science oriented professional entry courses (physio, radiolography/nuclear medicine etc)?

Yeah, Russ, I'm hopeful to get into some form of health-oriented post-grad course :)

Just what's this ATAR/UMAT stream you guys are talking about?

I meant have you considered it as undergrad? Every university other than Melbourne will offer them (eg LaTrobe has radiography from memory)

Yeah I have, but my primary goal is Medicine so I figure that doing a Science undergraduate degree would give me the opportunity to do Med as well as the possibility of other health-oriented degrees after my Bachelor's :)

You could try and go through the University of Melbourne's Melbourne Model - do a BSc or Biomedicine and then sit the GAMSAT 3 years later and hope for the best
Melbourne also has a Guaranteed Entry Scheme - if you get over 99.00, you get guaranteed a Full Fee place, over 99.90 you get guaranteed a CSP

Or, if you're confident with your ATAR, there's James Cook and Griffith (no UMAT) or Flinders (10% UMAT only)

Just what's this ATAR/UMAT stream you guys are talking about?

My understanding is that it is new this year, and is for people who got just below the UMAT cut-off (most likely still over 180 total score though) and have a 'good' ATAR (definitely 99+). These people are offered interviews after ATARs are released.

Ahkay, thanks for that Rohitpi.

Yeah paulsterio, hopefully the GAMSAT is nicer to me. And interstate is just not an option :P

Thanks for the confirmation, guys. I can pretty much chill for the rest of the year :)

The main thing  I don't understand; if ATARs were percentiles, am I any better off getting a 98 UMAT and 94 ATAR percentile (and therefore getting an early interview) than I am getting a 98 ATAR (percentile) and a 94 UMAT and attending a later interview? Because by the sounds of it, it just seems that they are getting some interviews out of the way early for potential applicants...
2010: Business Management [47]
2011: English [44]   |   Chemistry [45]  |   Methods [44]   |   Specialist [42]   |   MUEP Chemistry [5.0]   |   ATAR: 99.60
UMAT: 69 | 56 | 82 | = [69 / 98th Percentile]
2012: MBBS I @ Monash

i asked them about this, they said they wait till all the interviews have been conducted to rank applicants on a basis of all three criteria. Your advantage is simply a higher umat score. at least thats how i perceive what  I was told.

I think this year Monash has also changed it up, in that they aren't offering interviews if one of your raw scores is below 50.
